The research was conducted by the University of Leicester in collaboration with the Office for National Statistics in the UK. Though it hasn’t been peer-reviewed yet, this study is currently the largest one with the total number of researched patients reaching up to 47,780.
29.4% readmitted to the hospital, 12.3% died
Out of 47,780 patients who have recovered from Covid-19 and were discharged from the UK hospital in the first wave, 14,047 returned to the hospital within 140 days. Among these, 5,878 people couldn’t survive.
That translates to 29.4% re-hospitalized and 12.3% dead. Compared to other conditions, Covid-19 survivors are 3.5 times more likely to be readmitted to the hospital and die.
Kamlesh Khunti, a professor at Leicester University, shared that people seemed to be going home and getting long-term effects of coronavirus, coming back in the hospital and dying. Nearly 30% returning to the hospital was a large number. He also urged the UK National Health Service to adopt a monitoring system to track recovered patients after going home.

Possible causes of Covid-19 death after recovery
Professor Kamlesh Khunti said that scientists didn’t know whether Covid destroyed the cells that produced insulin or caused insulin resistance among recovered patients. They found many new diagnoses of diabetes, either Type 1 or Type 2, in these Covid survivors.
Previously, research showed that 10% of people who were infected with Covid-19 would suffer long-term symptoms that lasted at least 3 months. The impacts often include shortness of breath, exhaustion, temporary loss of memory, or concentration problems.
Covid-19 deaths in the UK
In the UK, more than 89,261 deaths have been reported. The government also records a Covid-related death if the patient dies within 28 days after a positive test.
Though the UK government is constantly introducing more Covid protocols to curb the spread of the virus, the NHS of this country says that a new Covid case is hospitalized every 30 seconds. Since Christmas, there are more than 15,000 new confirmed cases across the nation.
