Lightning Killed 31 in UP, Bihar; Over 100 Struck In Bihar In Just One Week

Also, the flood in Assam has claimed one more life, according to reports.

Reports have been rife that on Thursday, at least 31 lives were claimed due to lightning strikes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. And that was not the only natural incident that happened.

Lightning strikes killed over 100 people

More than 100 citizens have died after being struck by lightning in the last one week.

As per the disaster management department of the state, the reported casualties were from 8 districts including Patna, East Champaran, Samastipur, Sheohar, West Champaran, Madhepura, Purnea, and Katihar.

Among the above, Samastipur suffered the most with seven deaths, while Parna witnessed six lives claimed, East Champaran with four, Katihar with three, Madhepura and Sheohar: two each and Purnea and West Champaran: one each.

On 30 June, lightning strikes killed 11 people in 5 districts while 83 akin demises were reported from a total of 23 districts within 24 hours on 25 June. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed his grief over the fatalities and ordered a sum of Rs 4 lakh to contribute as ex-gratia to each deceased’s next of kin.

In Uttar Pradesh, 5 people died while 12 others were injured due to lightning strikes in the Ballia district. Reported by police, those deceased include Babulal Singh, a 70-year-old retired Army man and Nirmal Verma, a 43-year-old villager who got struck by lightning while he was working in the fields in Dokati area’s Babu Ka Shivpur village.

On Wednesday, ten other people were struck by thunderbolts and were injured while working on the field in Mahthapar village. After the incident, although they were all rushed to the hospital, two women, including Sheela (19) and Savita (44), deceased during treatment.

Flood killed one in Assam

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam kept on being grim as it killed one more person on Thursday, raising the death toll to 34. Meanwhile, in 22 out of Assam’s 33 districts, more than 16.03 people are affected by the flood.

72,700 hectares of crop area in the state have been inundated by the floodwaters, as stated on Thursday.

The districts that got flood-hit are Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Chirang, Biswanath, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Morigaon, Golaghat, Nagaon, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and West Karbi Anglong districts.

In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department predicted on Thursday that there would heavy to very heavy rain in Mumbai’s isolated places and neighboring coastal districts. They also issued an orange alert for the next two days.

For the unversed, an orange alert means that preparations should be carried out by authorities to prevent and handle any possible situation due to severe weather conditions.
