Claiming Pets Can Spread COVID-19, Noida Residents Are Attacking Animal Feeders And Pet Owners

Uliya Obydenova, living in Noida’s sector 71, is a Russian woman who has been taking care of 5 thousand street dogs since 2015 with the support of a 12-volunteer team. She reported to be receiving strange treatment from Noida locals for the last few days.

She said they objected when she went close to the villages and slums to feed because they think she, a foreigner, may spread the novel coronavirus. Therefore, she has been getting more help from volunteers these days and managing everything with people’s personal donations.

Prejudice and paranoia seem to have risen against pet and stray animals. Feeders are claiming that they have to deal with multiple fronts as some Noida, Ghaziabad areas are about to seal the coronavirus infected hotspots. Amid the prevention of contraction, there have been reports of angst against animal feeders. Over the last few days, animal activists from Greater and Ghaziabad even have to ask for police intervention because of the happened sporadic incidents.

On March 23 at Palm Olympia, Samriti Datta, a lady who has been avidly taking care of stray canines and even enormous animals were assaulted by neighbors inside her society. In a similar society, Gaurav Bammi, another pooch parent, got attacked with heavy objects like planters and diyas for fostering two stray puppies. Luckily, she was not injured.

Some have reported the incidents to Gautam Budh Nagar police but there has been no action taken. Meanwhile, a PCR van of police had to rush to Noida Extension’s Exotica Dreamville when an RWA member took to Twitter that pet owners should ditch the pets as they will spread the virus.

A Ghaziabad-hailed animal activist mentioned that this situation is one of paranoia, charitably speaking, and most people attacking feeders and pet-parents are basically dog haters who are taking advantage of this time as an excuse.

In the garb of emerging abuse and attack incidents, Maneka Gandhi - Women and Child Development’s union minister and People for Animals’ chairperson, told a daily that there was no scientific rationale for the current fear people are having towards cats and dogs. The case of animal feeders, especially women, being harassed is the result of the pandemic circumstance getting utilized as an excuse to vent individual grouse domestic animals.

Talking about the case of the Bronx, US Tiger being infected with COVID-19, Gandhi said that because a tiger and a cat’s difference is like that of a wolf and a dog,  not feeding cats or casting them off the house is a cruel action and has absolutely no scientific basis.

Also, in India as of late, not one animal has been detected to contract the virus.

First, the dearth of food broke out and followed by was a hiking lashback. What all residents need to do now is coming forward and lending a hand to the animals at this period. According to dog rescuers and dog-shelter staff, hundreds of dogs and other pets are relying on food waste and garbage bins from the restaurants that have been closed since 24th March due to the lockdown to prevent COVID-19 spread.
