Dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, Grindr, and Feeld have made it possible for many singles to find a date, and some just can't stop using them. These apps are almost always on top of the download page as seen in the UK market.
The Ugly Truth
However, new research has pointed out some grim results for those who are addicted. This is due to an in-app mechanism called "infinite swipe" which stimulate one's attraction to look rather than personality. When a dating app user judges another's profile and swipe in less than a second, the research says this would reduce their chance of spotting the love of their life.
By making these split-second decisions, according to Dr. Richard Graham from good-thinking.uk, they ignore common interests and focus too much on the fabled "love at first sight." Dr. Richard goes on to explain the detrimental role of conversation and personality in a relationship, rather than choosing your future lover on appearance.
Disheartening Findings
To prove this, JigTalk launched a survey of 1000 dating app users from the UK, and the outcome shows that almost 30% of users spend at least seven hours a week swiping away at apps. To make the matter worse, there was a whopping 14% of those surveyed reached 14 hours/ week.
According to this survey, men used these type of apps more than woman, with 40% of them have more than 3 apps on their phone, and there are 10% who are using more than 5 at once.
A Word of Advice
JigTalk CEO Alex Durrant warns that although dating apps were the sparked for many relationships the world over, some even led to marriage. However, they are meant to be message platforms and not Instagram. "The key to finding love", Durrant says, is to get to know your potential partner through talking.
