The coronavirus situation is getting more intense in India. While PM Narendra Modi has ordered the lockdown of the whole country for 21 days to curb the spread of this novel virus, but based on the increasing number of newly infected cases, it will be extended soon. A majority of Indian people feel the need for extending the ongoing 3-week lockdown in their country.
According to a survey conducted by the global public opinion and data company, YouGov, nearly 69% of Indians thought the government should stay home beyond 14 April to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was carried out from 31 March to 3 April and collected the answers of 1000 respondents.
Perhaps the sentiment might come from the fact that more Indians are more scared of the Coronavirus than they were a few weeks back. Only in a short span of time, the number of confirmed cases skyrocketed to nearly 6000 and the death tolls reached 166. Meanwhile, the recovered patients make up for a small percentage, at only 8%.
However, after 10 days into the national quarantine, the fear levels among the public have stabilized.
YouGov’s survey also has it that people across all ages in India feel PM Modi’s government isn’t doing enough in the battle of fighting against COVID-19. People from the older generation think the authorities need to put more effort.
Not just this, the citizens also want their government to take care more for migrant labor in terms of shelter and essential supply.
The fact is that roughly 470 million migrant workers also have to face another crisis as they were trapped away from their residences when the lockdown was ordered nationwide on March 24. They are now living with limited essentials.
