Everyone has crushes at some point in life. Maybe it's for a hot guy in your class or just a girl you saw at a party once. Sometimes, your crush is right next to you, in that group of friend you're holding so dearly. Whatever it is, realizing you are in love with someone sends a chill down your spine and has butterflies to your stomach. But is it usual to fall for one of your friends?
According to founder and dating coach at UpDate Coaching Andrea Amour, it's perfectly normal to have a crush on ones that are closer to you. Amour says there are heaps of relationships that started with a friend being attracted to another, and it is just that: friendships have a touch of attraction between the two parties.
So, if you think Cupid's arrow has hit you by one of your friends, here are some experts' insights on how to confirm that sensation.
1. Spending time with them gets you all flustered
Getting excited over the time you and your friend are about to spend together means you have romantic feelings for him or her. Typically, when you are interested in someone, your body will release chemicals such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and endogenous opioids, says clinical neuropsychologist, Dr. Rhonda Freeman.
So, you can genuinely feel the sensation of having a crush on someone not only in your head but also observe as it courses through your body. If you sense this way, you're definitely into him or her, hard!
2. You're Curious About What They Are Doing All The Time
Have you ever had the urge to check up on them when you are apart? Or do you often find yourself wondering what they are up to without you? If this is the case, Dr. Freeman said this is one way to confirm you've crushed your friend. Regular friends may think about one another once in a while, but if the frequency gets higher, it's a telltale sign, your heart is entirely leaning towards this person.
Remember the endogenous opioids we talked about earlier? This chemical plays its part again. It will heighten your senses until you notice almost everything about your love interest: from things like their smell, their gesture, their laugh, to even the facial expressions they are showing.
3. You crave physical affection with them
The sexual attraction is one of the biggest tells you're crushing on your friend. Although everyone views and expresses love differently, the craving for physical affection is almost always something to look out for. Amour says if you are fantasizing about sleeping, dancing with them or only just kissing them, this might mean you are into them romantically.
Don't be afraid to go for it
If you have such feelings for your friend, chances are you are trying to get out of the friendzone. Now, the question becomes what to do about it. Many people think confessing your love to your friend would ruin their friendship, but Amour advised against this.
If you have pent-up feelings, your behavior will change and your friend, if he or she is close enough to you, would surely notice. So, why not take the initiative? If you've already confirmed you're feeling, merely go for it.
It's better to have the upper hand anyway, and if things go well, you may strike a romantic relationship with your friend. Otherwise, you know likewise that there is only existence of beautiful friendship between both of you.
