An announcement has been made by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that foreign students will not be able to stay in the country if their courses this fall are taught fully online because of the global pandemic.
It did not come fully clear on how many student visas would be affected by this move. However, foreign students are one of the ley revenue sources for a lot of U.S universities as they often pay complete tuition.
ICE said that the student visa would have to leave the United States is their school’s classes are taught fully online for this fall. They have two choices: transfer or leave the nation. Or else, they will potentially face deportation proceedings.
Universities and colleges have started to issue pans for the 2020 fall semester in the midst of the virus spread. On Monday, Harvard University announced that it would run course instruction online for the academic year of 2020-2021.
The recent guidance of ICE applies to the M-1 and F-1visa holders. These are the visa for vocational and academic students, According to the data of the agency, 9.518 M visas and 388,839 F visas have been issued in fiscal 2019.
Students having classes in person are not affected by this guidance. F-1 students who take a partial online class-load are also not affected as long as their universities verify that the instruction is not fully digital.
Students of the F-1 English language training program and M-1 vocational program will not be allowed to take any online classes.
The administration of President Donald Trump has exploited multiple new restrictions on illegal and legal immigration for the last few months as a result of the global pandemic.
In June, the new administration has suspended work visas of a huge number of non-immigrant workers as it argued competition with United States citizens for jobs.
It has also suspended the acceptance of asylum seekers effectively at the southern border with Mexico, citing the health risks related to coronavirus as justification.
