Maatje Benassi, a U.S military reservist, has been at the receiving end of numerous death threats, together with her family members. This is due to the Chinese conspiracy theory claims that she's the coronavirus’s patient zero.
“It's like waking up from a bad dream going into a nightmare day after day," an emotional Maatje, consoled by her husband, Matt Benassi, told a CNN reporter.
The mob accusing her of this went as far as posting her home address online. The couple has 2 young children who are now all under serious threats as where they live is now public knowledge.
Maatje desperately told the reporter:
"I want everybody to stop harassing me because this is cyberbullying to me and it's gone way out of hand"
She later went on and expressed her concern about receiving unexpected “visits” from family members of the deceased. Maatje explained it’s very likely that they would blame her for their beloved ones’ death, due to the belief that she brought the virus to China.
Uncredited Youtube clips accused the military reservist of bringing the deadly virus to China. Last year, she participated in the Military World Games in Wuhan and this is what they believe to be the occasion when it all started.
The infamous video has been making its round all over the globe. Surprisingly, the Chinese Communist Party has shared these false claims. It's not their first time doing so, either. This is a legitimate government institution of a country, yet it spread these slanders which potentially can kill someone.
Threats directed at the mother-of-two have been vicious. Besides death threats, many comments online call for her execution or imprisonment. Some even read “Execute these people” or “These people will get a bullet to the skull”.
To top it off about the ridiculousness of these accusations, Benassi has never even been diagnosed with the coronavirus.
Here's the clip of her interview with CNN:
