Big-budget Bollywood movies are not themselves without the chartbuster tracks. A lot of songs have become an icon through generations. However, the Indian music industry has also been under fire because of copyright issues. Namely, Indian filmmakers had copied blatantly international songs and used them in their own movies.
There are multiple Bollywood songs copied from Kpop and we have compiled 6 times this happened. Check out Indian songs copied from Kpop:
1. Ekka Da Ekkada from Veedu Thada
- Original: Bonamana - Super Junior
Veedu Thada is the 2011 Telugu movie starring Nikhil Siddharth and Puja Banerjee. The film was not bad but their upbeat song Ekkada Ekkada attracted attention for another reason.
Multiple fans have found out that the track was “150% plagiarized from Bonamana”, a track by boyband Super Junior.
Bonamana by Super Junior was released in 2010 as the title track of their studio album. They are among the torchbearers of the Hally waves in South Korea. Here is the original:
2. Bhool Bhulaiyan Title Track
- Original: My Lecon - JTL
The title track of Bhool Bhulaiyan featuring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Ameesha Patel is also one of the Bollywood songs copied from Kpop. The movie was hugely successful and remains in the most-watched movies in India list.
The title song also contributed a big time to make the movie viral. The track was crooned by Neeraj Shridhar, composed by Pritam while Sameer penned the lyrics. However, the 2007 song sounds just like My Lecon song by JTL.
For the unknown, the song went on floors in 2001. JTL released this song as part of their album Enter The Dragon. In 2003, they disbanded as the member started pursuing their solo careers.
3. Mantoiyat - Raftaar x Nawazuddin Siddiqui
- Original: Do You – RM (BTS)
Raftaar is one of the most popular Bollywood singers. His song for Manto in 2018, however, received backlashes after the buzz discovered that it was a copy from Do You by BTS RM.
In his MV Mantoiyat, he made a rap about social issues as well as raised questioned about social norms. Both the music video and the concept seem to be plagiarized from the BTS leader’s song.
Post the social media outrage, Raftaar posted an official apology for the resemblance between the tracks. He also stated that the responsibility belongs to the music director when it comes to the song’s content.
Meanwhile, RM had his track Do You released under Big Hit Entertainment. The track comes from the mixtape on 20 March 2015. BTS is the boyband with the most powerful fandom in the world currently. ARMY have had extreme reactions towards Bollywood songs copied from BTS.
4. Baatein Kuch Ankahee - Pritam, KK
- Original: Beautiful Person from My Lovely Sam Soon
The track from Life In A… Metro movie was Pritam's work. Singer KK performed the track. However, the 2007 song sounds ridiculously the same to Beautiful Person, a track from the Korean movie My Lovely Sam Soon.
Not only the beat but also the melody of Baatein Kuch Ankahee are totally similar the other.
The Korean drama My Name Is Kim Sam Soon hit the small screens in 2005. The series is one of the most famous romantic drama back then.
5. Mama Iragadheei and Dhamkimar - Kannayya
- Original: Mama Beat - LC9 (ft. Gain); Growl - EXO
Kannayya marked in the list with not just one but two Indian songs copied from Kpop. The Telugu movie has five songs on the whole and two of them are copied from Korean songs.
While Mama Iragadheei is a copy of LC9’s Mama Beat, Dhamkimar is exactly the second version of EXO’s Growl. Kannayya hit the screens in 2017. Meanwhile, Mama Beat is from the 2013 album SKIRMISH and Growl is part of EXO’s album XOXO also in 2013.
See the blatant similarities here:
6. Pehli Nazar Mein from Race
- Original: I Love You - Kim Hyung Sup
Race’s Pehli Nazar Mein is a hit song released in 2012. The movie starred Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, and Akshaye Khanna in the main roles. The track was performed by Atif Aslam. Guess who is the composer? Pritam!
Although it was touted as one of the most massive hits in India, it was still a copy and netizens had things to say about this.
I Love You (Sarang Hae Yo) by Kim Hyung Sup came from hit drama Sassy Girl Chun-Hyang. It got introduced in 2005.
7. Musthabai Vasthundi
- Original: BIGBANG – FANTASTIC BABY
Coming from the film Mr. Pellikoduku, Musthabai Vasthundi is another one among the Bollywood songs copied from Korean. The popular song was released along with the film in 2013.
Music composer Devi Prasad along with other producers unashamedly used BigBang’s Fantastic Baby background score and lyrics.
Meanwhile, Fantastic Baby was included in BigBang World Tour Album. The song came on floors under YG Entertainment and established as one of the biggest hits of all time in K-pop.
