Mahavir Janma Kalyanak or Mahavir Jayanti is an auspicious holiday to celebrate the birth of Lord Mahavira who is believed to be the founder of Jainism.
Vardhamana Mahavira was the 24th and also the last Tirthankara in Jainism. Mahavira’s birth anniversary takes place on the 13th day of the bright half of the moon in Chaitra month, which means today April 6th of 2020.
Tracing back to the origin of Lord Mahavir, he was born to King Siddhartha and Queen Trisala in the palace of Vaishali. He was named Vardhamana (meaning “one who grows”), implying his ability to foster life and development.
Lord Mahavira ruled the kingdom for 30 years before giving up all possessions to become a spiritual teacher of Jain. Throughout his life, he preached non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-stealing (asteya), chastity (brahmacharya) and non-attachment (aparigraha) to his disciples and disseminated these values to his community.
On Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, satvik diet is strictly followed which embraces fresh meals with minimum harm to the living creatures.
