With a quick search on the web, you find beauty tips for women outnumbered that of men's a thousand to one. But the more masculine half of the population needs to care for their faces, too! Let's sit down with Dr. Ian Landells, a dermatologist with the Canadian Dermatology Association, to find out ways to obtain healthier skins for the boyfriends and husbands out there.

Follow Your Hair Growth As You Shave

The most common routine for a guy's morning is shaving, yet, most of them don't even know how to do it properly. According to Landells, the act of shaving against the direction of hair growth is quite popular among men, but this cannot be further from the truth.

This habit would more often than not cause irritation and damage the hair. Landells' advice is to move your razor in the same direction as the growth of the hair and to only do one stroke at a time.

Do Some Prep Before Working The Blades

Keep this in mind: never shave when your skin is dry. This can cause a heap of problems such as cuts, acne, and ingrown hair, so before you whip out the razor, Landells suggests splashing your face with water beforehand. Even better, he said to do it during or right after the shower, as this will soften the skin. Then apply some shaving cream and let the blades do its thing.

Choose the Right Tool For The Job

As technology advances, so does men's razor. Companies these days would pump out products with 4 or even 5 blades. However, men with sensitive skin should look out for fewer blades in their daily shaves. As Landells explained, ingrown hair can occur for guys with curly or coarse hair, and they create acne-like bumps that are quite undesirable.

Razors with more blades tend to give you a clean shave in one stroke, but for those who are prone to ingrown hair, you should consider reducing the number of blades. The dermatologist also mentioned the material of the blade. Some metal can cause irritation due to allergy, and razors with titanium blades can remedy this problem.

Look For The Cosmetics That Was Made For You

Men skins are quite sensitive, so it's always wise to look out for products that fit your skin type. Landells says to always keep an eye out for those with the term "sensitive skin" on the label, as they tend to have less chemical substances that are damaging to your face.

He also advised against using aftershave, as, even if they smell amazing, they are filled with harsh chemicals that aggravate the skin. It's better to just put on a light, oil-free moisturizer on wet skin.

Don't Forget To Apply Sunscreen

One thing men tend to ignore is the sunscreen. As everyone can tell you, ultraviolet radiation from the sun is not good for your body. Even when sunrays are filtered through your car's windows. Landells recommends that everyone should apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 before heading out.

And on dryer seasons, men should look for moisturizing with built-in sunscreen so they don't have to apply 2 sets of products every time they want to go out for a walk.
