James Gunn is aiming to revive the dead DC Cinematic Universe with his new projects.

DC’s cinematic universe is getting a reboot under James Gunn and Peter Safran, kicking off with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. From Superman to Batman, here’s what’s coming in 2025 and beyond, including DCU and Elseworlds projects. Expect a mix of movies and shows, with some still in flux.

Confirmed Releases

  • Superman (Movie, July 11, 2025): David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent, balancing his Kryptonian roots with his human life. Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor, and Milly Alcock debuts as Supergirl. Directed by James Gunn, it’s the DCU’s true start, inspired by All-Star Superman. Features Krypto the Superdog and heroes like Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific. Fits in DCU: Launches Chapter One, setting up Supergirl’s solo film and more.
  • The Sandman: Season 2 (TV, July 3 & July 24, 2025): Netflix’s final season of the Vertigo adaptation, with Tom Sturridge as Morpheus. Covers the Season of Mists arc, exploring his past with Hell.   • Watchmen: Chapter II (Animated TV, 2025): Max’s animated finale adapts Alan Moore’s comic, tackling the squid ending. Praised for staying true to the source. Fits in DCU: Elseworlds, separate from DCU continuity.
  • Harley Quinn: Season 5 (Animated TV, Early 2025): Kaley Cuoco voices Harley in this Max series, now in Metropolis with Ivy and mixing with Superman. Fits in DCU: Elseworlds, not tied to DCU.
  • Krypto the Superdog Shorts (Animated TV, Late 2025): Four short films on Max, starting after Superman’s release, focusing on Krypto. One short per year. Fits in DCU: Ties directly to Superman in the DCU.
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (Movie, June 26, 2026): Milly Alcock stars as a jaded Kara Zor-El, based on Tom King’s comic. Directed by Craig Gillespie, with Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts as Ruthye and Krem. Filming starts early 2025. Fits in DCU: Kara debuts in Superman, with this film expanding her darker story in Chapter One.
  • Clayface (Movie, Fall 2026): A horror-thriller about Batman’s shapeshifting foe, written by Mike Flanagan with rewrites by Hossein Amini. James Watkins in talks to direct. Fits in DCU: Part of the DCU, not Reeves’ Batman universe, despite early rumors.
  • The Batman: Part II (Movie, October 1, 2027): Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight returns in Matt Reeves’ Elseworlds sequel. Filming starts April 2025. May tie to The Penguin with Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb. Fits in DCU: Elseworlds, separate from DCU’s Batman.

Projects Without Confirmed Release Dates

  • The Brave and the Bold (Movie): A DCU Batman film focusing on Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian Wayne, as Robin. Draws from Grant Morrison’s comics. Andy Muschietti was attached but Gunn’s now leading, delaying development. Fits in DCU: Introduces the DCU’s Batman and Bat-family in Chapter One.
  • The Authority (Movie): A darker Justice League-style team with proactive heroes. On the “back burner” due to script challenges and comparisons to The Boys. Fits in DCU: Part of Chapter One, but delayed.
  • Swamp Thing (Movie): A horror-focused film about the monster. Still in development for Chapter One. Fits in DCU: Expands the DCU’s supernatural side.
  • Teen Titans (Movie): A live-action film featuring the young hero team. In early development. Fits in DCU: Part of Chapter One, introducing younger DCU heroes.
  • Lanterns (TV): An HBO detective-style series with Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Written by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof. Filming starts February 2025, expected early 2026. Fits in DCU: Key Chapter One project, tying to cosmic DCU elements.
  • Waller (TV): Viola Davis stars as Amanda Waller on Max. Delayed by strikes, but still alive, taking a backseat to Peacemaker. Fits in DCU: Connects to Creature Commandos and Superman.
  • Booster Gold (TV): A Max series about the time-traveling hero with imposter syndrome. New showrunner attached after delays. Fits in DCU: Chapter One, adding humor to the DCU.
  • Paradise Lost (TV): A Max series about Themyscira’s history before Wonder Woman. In development. Fits in DCU: Sets up Wonder Woman’s world in Chapter One.
  • Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (Animated Movie): Yohualli Coatl becomes Batman in the Aztec Empire, fighting Spanish conquistadors. No release date, but set for Max. Fits in DCU: Elseworlds, reimagining Batman’s lore.
  • Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League (Animated Movie): Bruce Wayne battles a twisted Justice League in feudal Japan. No release date, set for Max. Fits in DCU: Elseworlds, expanding Batman’s animated adventures.
  • Dynamic Duo (Animated Movie): Focuses on Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, not Batman. Announced Fall 2024, no release date. Fits in DCU: Elseworlds, exploring Robin’s legacy.
  • Starfire (Animated TV): A Max series about Teen Titan Starfire’s galactic adventures from Tamaran. No release date. Fits in DCU: Likely Elseworlds, tied to Teen Titans lore.
  • Green Lantern: Jessica Cruz (Animated TV): Teen Jessica Cruz becomes a Green Lantern on Max, facing cosmic threats. No release date. Fits in DCU: Likely DCU, expanding the Lantern mythos.
