With more than 4,557 cases and 399 deaths, Indonesia is on full alert when dealing with the coronavirus outbreak. Just like India and many other countries in the world, this South East Asia country is practicing total lockdown and people are asked not to leave home except for emergencies. To enforce the locals to stay inside their household, a group of volunteers came up with the idea of disguising into a ghost.
According to the local group of volunteers in Kepuh village, Sukoharjo province in Indonesia, they have started their project since the beginning of April. A couple of volunteers dress like ‘pocong’ (or ‘pochong’) ghosts which are believed to haunt the graveyards according to the country folklore. They wear a piece of white burial shroud while having their head and feet are tied with a knot.

The initiative was carried out under the police’s permission. However, it turns out to be backfired. The locals are all gushing over the ‘fake ghost’. Apart from making headlines on the internet, this project also gained public attention and curiosity that some people even risked leaving their homes to see the ghost with their own eyes.
Last Monday, Indonesia declared a national emergency of a coronavirus pandemic. According to President Joko Widodo, the country is on full alert and is going to take action to stop the spread of coronavirus. The country is now suffering from a high number of new cases as local people aren’t fully aware of how serious the situation is. They cannot give up on their daily routine, leaving home frequently and this is one of the hardest parts of preventing the community transmission admit the pandemic.
