The upcoming Elton John biopic will tell a full story of the legendary musician's life and career and here is everything we learned from the film’s first look preview.
This is not a typical biopic
For those who think that the film will follow a standard motif as ‘a normal boy becomes global superstar’, you might think again.
According to NME, the first minutes of footage aired at the preview shows Elton John (played by Taron Egerton) and a large troupe of extras dancing through a fairground singing ‘Saturday”. His songs will be used throughout the movie as a narrative, with characters bursting into song as they would in any other musical.
There is some really nutty stuff here
Dexter Fletcher stated that he wanted to make the ‘musical fantasy’ scene featuring Elton’s iconic performance at the Troubadour club that propelled him into superstardom. Elton John made his US debut at the Troubadour club back in the 1970s with the song ‘Crocodile Rock’. When the piano-playing prodigy elevated high into the air, it immediately captured the hearts of the entire audience.
Also, there were some hints of surreal sequences featuring Elton playing the piano at the bottom of the sea. Explaining the meaning behind the scene, Dexter said,
It won’t shy away from Elton’s dark side
The biopic won’t shy away from his dark side of drug, sex and shopping addictions. Taron Egerton said,
He also added that the beginning of the film sees him going to rehab for help with addiction and the story ends up with him being so broken.
Taron Egerton makes a strong impression as getting into the skin of Elton John
He not only looks like him but also sounds like him. The 29-year-old actor had even spent a long time recording all Elton's music and trying to get it all right. So now, it could be difficult for you to tell whether it is him or Elton singing.
Bernie Taupin is the second lead
Elton John and Bernie Taupin have had one of the most enduring and productive partnerships in the British music’s industry. While Bernie was jointly responsible for penning the lyrics of hit songs such as Rocket Man, I'm Still Standing, and Tiny Dancer, most people could not pick him out of the line-up.
According to the director, their relationship is ‘Rocketman’s central love story’. Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin will also have his musical moments with a scene featuring him singing ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ after having a big fight with Elton.
It will be full of glitz and glam of Elton John as a performer.
The makers said that there were some scenes of Elton in the customs of Elizabeth I, one giant parrot and many other spangle customs.
The soundtracks will not be the same as you remember
The film’s music producer Giles Martin revealed that after receiving all permission from Elton and Bernie, the production team has worked on re-recording all the songs for the biopic. Therefore, they will sound different from the original ones.
The film will be rated R for sex scenes and drug use
After Daily Mail reported that Paramount Pictures is putting pressure on him to cut at least part of the scene and maintain a PG-13 rating, Dexter Fletcher took to his Twitter to shut down the report.
It deserves to be one of the most anticipated films in 2019
Rocketman is based on the life of Elton John, one of the most famous musicians in music history. It will start from his childhood as a musical prodigy to his rise to international fame as well as his struggles with alcohol and sex addictions. The biopic is all set to release on 24th May.
