In contrast to the godlike strength of DC Comics’ superheroes, Stan Lee, a legendary creator of Marvel Comics, has a different way to develop characters. It's undeniable fact that the comic writer creates many iconic superheroes that are loved around the world.
On Monday, comic fans around the world received the sad news about the death of the legendary creator, Stan Lee. The death of Stan Lee was confirmed by Kirk Schenck, Joan Celia Lee's attorney. He passed away in a Los Angeles' Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai when he was 95.
Stan Lee is known as the co-creator of many iconic Marvel's comic superheroes, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, and many more. Even at the age of 90s, he has been still so dynamic when participating in different events for comic readers, such as Comic-Con, to interact and connect with comic fans.
Under the cooperation between Marvel and Disney, Marvel comic fans have chances to see their favourite superheroes on monumental movies. Even though, there is no doubt that the attraction of Marvel superheroes movies is not only come from trilling and funny movie scene but from the cameo appearance of Stan Lee.
Throughout his career, he created numerous superheroes that gain so much love of comic readers until nowadays. There is one thing that Stan Lee did not just create his character by accident but to compete the big rival of Marvel, DC comic.
It is not hard to realize that superheroes of DC Universe have had the superpower like a god; good examples for this case are three iconic DC superheroes: Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. Superman almost has no weakness, except rare material Kryptonite and some factor which is not easy to produce. He has everything that any superhero wants, he has super strength, super speed, ability to fly, bullet-proof skin, laser eyes and more. Even a human likes Batman is still not easy to achieve or access. It seems to be that he has only one life goal which is to fight again crime.
In contrast, Stan Lee has a different orientation in creating and developing his character. With Stan Lee, a superhero is not the one who just have to fight again supervillains. He wants his superheroes to have the relation with normal people who are vulnerable, able to get hurt, get bleed and have everyday issues to face with. There is the fact that Superman is powerful and awesome, but how a man come from outer space could relate to any normal person. In an interview, Stan Lee shared his opinion about Superman that he has no interest in Superman as there is nothing to worry about him. Stan Lee stated: "And if you’re not worried about the jam your hero is in, there’s no excitement."
Spiderman is some case in point. He is a superhero, he fights again criminals and protects citizens with his spider web. But finally, readers can realize a part of them in Spiderman as Spiderman still has to deal with so many problems of young people; such as study, homework, girlfriend issues, or being bullied. Sometimes, he had to stand between being a superhero or spend the time to solve everyday problems.
In addition to carefully creating characters, Stan Lee also pays attention to the context. Instead of creating cities like Metropolis and Gotham, which are fictional cities of DC, Stan Lee chose a real and familiar city, Big Apple - New York City.
It is clear that Stan Lee has distributed so much for the development and success of Marvel Comics. Without Stan Lee, Marvel’s superheroes and MCU might not exist.
Rest in peace, Stan Lee. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
