“Ponniyin Selvan”: Know Everything About Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Historical Drama

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was last seen on celluloid in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Fanney Khan (2018), next stars in one of the most ambitious projects of her movie career. Yes, we are talking about the upcoming Tamil-language historical drama, Ponniyin Selvan.

The movie reunites Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam after a long gap of a decade. The duo last worked together on the 2010 film Raavan, co-starring Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram.

Ponniyin Selvan began production a couple of months ago in Thailand before completing a schedule in India. However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the makers had to put the shoot on hold, which has caused an inordinate delay in production. However, the movie may now be shot in one long schedule in order to make it to theatres in 2021.

According to reports, the makers were gearing up to commence the third shooting schedule of Ponniyin Selvan in Puducherry. Shiva Anand of Madras Talkies confirmed that the film will now be sot in one go. Talking to a publication, he said that just like everybody else in the industry, they are also waiting for the shoot to resume and talk to the actors about their dates. It will be difficult to coordinate the schedules, but it is their job to figure out a way. He goes on to add that they have no intention of compromising on the film. They will release the first part next year, though they do not have clarity on the release date yet.

According to reports, Mani Ratnam is hoping to get bulk dates from Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi and all other actors on the ensemble cast so that the film can be wrapped up in one go. If all goes well, the team will begin the Puducherry schedule with Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. If the team does not get the necessary permission for an outdoor shoot, they might change the venue to the AVM Studios in Chennai.

Ponniyin Selvan is a two-part film based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's historical fictional novel of the same name. Apart from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram and Karthi, the high-profile film also features Jayam Ravi, Vikram Prabhu, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aditi Roy Hydari and Jayaram, among others.
