The Decade Club: 10 Sci-Fi and Horror Shows Built for a Long Binge

Most genre series fade after a few years. These ten refused. Each lasted at least ten seasons, mixing aliens, ghosts, zombies, time travel, and the occasional sarcastic robot. If you want a binge that can last months instead of a weekend, this is the list.

Doctor Who (1963-present)

The Time Lord regenerates, and so does the show. Classic Who ran 26 seasons. The 2005 revival added more than a dozen series on top of that. Daleks, Weeping Angels, and quiet cosmic dread sit next to wonder and humor. New viewers can start with the 2005 episode "Rose" and still get a complete modern run before dipping into the 1960s serials.

Supernatural (2005-2020), 15 seasons

Sam and Dean Winchester hunt demons, ghosts, and eventually God himself. The first five seasons form a tight mythic arc. Later years grow uneven, yet the brother chemistry and monster-of-the-week cases still make this the longest successful urban-fantasy horror series on American TV.

The X-Files (1993-2018), 11 seasons

FBI agents Mulder and Scully chase aliens, government cover-ups, and creatures that should not exist. Standalone "monster of the week" episodes still scare. The conspiracy arc is messier, but the believer-skeptic pairing remains one of television's best. Two revival seasons arrived years after the original nine.

The Walking Dead (2010-2022), 11 seasons

A zombie apocalypse is only the backdrop. The real horror is what survivors do to one another. Early seasons are lean and brutal. Later ones sprawl, yet the show defined a decade of TV horror and launched a whole franchise of spin-offs.

American Horror Story (2011-present), 12 seasons and counting

Ryan Murphy's anthology resets the cast, setting, and threat every year: haunted house, asylum, coven, freak show, hotel, and more. Quality swings hard from season to season, which is the point. You can skip a weak chapter and still have a complete story. Season 13 arrives later this month.

Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007), 10 seasons

A military team uses an ancient portal to hop across the galaxy, fight parasitic gods, and steal alien tech. The tone is adventurous rather than bleak, with 214 episodes of planet-of-the-week fun that slowly builds a huge mythology. It once held a Guinness record for longest-running consecutive North American sci-fi series.

Smallville (2001-2011), 10 seasons

Clark Kent grows from awkward Kansas teen to Superman across 217 episodes. Meteor freaks, Lex Luthor's slow fall, and a long "no tights, no flights" rule give the origin story room to breathe. It is the most complete live-action Superman story ever put on weekly TV.

Futurama (1999-present), 14 seasons

Pizza guy Fry wakes up a thousand years later and joins a delivery crew of robots, mutants, and one-eyed pilots. The jokes are sharp. The sci-fi ideas (time loops, parallel universes, robot uprisings) are sharper. Canceled twice and revived twice, it is still producing new episodes.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988-present), 13-plus seasons

A trapped human and two robots riff on terrible B-movies from a satellite in orbit. Many of those films are vintage sci-fi and horror schlock. The original ten-season run is the core. Later revivals keep the same loving, merciless tone.

Red Dwarf (1988-2020), 12 series plus specials

The last human alive is an idiot. His company is a hologram of his dead bunkmate, a vain creature evolved from the ship's cat, and a neurotic service android. British sci-fi comedy at its driest, with time travel, parallel selves, and the occasional existential nightmare.

None of these shows is perfect for every episode. Longevity almost never is. What they share is scale: enough story to live in for weeks, and enough variety that you can skip a weak stretch without losing the plot. Pick one, clear a weekend, and accept that the weekend will turn into a month.
