Arundhati Roy recently accused the Indian government of exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic in order to inflame tensions between Muslims and Hindus.

Political activist and well-known novelist Arundhati Roy again found herself at the center of controversies due to her statement. She recently accused the Indian government of exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic in order to inflame tensions between Muslims and Hindus.

Arundhati Roy
Arundhati Roy is also known to be a controversial novelist

Hashtag #ArundhatiRoy is currently topping the trending on social media as many right-wing activists have been pulling their socks up to jointly bombard this novelist for defaming the country.

In the latest interview with DW.com taking place on Friday, Roy said that the alleged strategy of the “Hindu nationalist government” is to dovetail with the health crisis to build up to something that is likely to grab the attention of the whole world. She went on to say that the current situation that India is approaching is nothing short of genocidal.

She said,

"I think what has happened is COVID-19 has exposed things about India that all of us knew. We are suffering, not just from COVID, but from a crisis of hatred, from a crisis of hunger."

Elaborating further, Roy added,

"This crisis of hatred against Muslims comes on the back of a massacre in Delhi, which was the result of people protesting against the anti-Muslim citizenship law. Under the cover of COVID-19 the government is moving to arrest young students, to fight cases against lawyers, against senior editors, against activists and intellectuals. Some of them have recently been put in jail."

With more than 17,000 COVID-19 patients (as of now), India has become the new epicenter of the pandemic in Asia. The situation is getting more intense and PM Modi had to extend the nationwide lockdown till May 3 but the number of new confirmed cases is still growing.
