Abhishek Chaubey To Helm Biopic On Hockey Player Dhyan Chand

Abhishek Chaubey has not announced next film since the release of Sonchiriya in 2018. Sonchiriya, produced by Ronnie Screwvala, failed to perform well at the box office and incurred heavy losses to the makers. Starring Bhumi Pednekar and Sushant Singh Rajput in lead roles, the dacoit drama was expected to do good business, but it failed to live up to the high expectations of the audiences and turned out to be a box-office dud.

Keeping the failure of Sonchiriya aside, producer Ronnie Screwvala and director Abhishek Chaubey are set to join hands once again. Yes, you heard that right! Speculations are rife that the two creative geniuses have teamed up to make a biopic on legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.

Sports biopic have been performing screamingly well in Bollywood. Just like every year, we will see an avalanche of such movies in 2020 as well. From Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan to Parineeti Chopra’s Saina, several sports biopics are set to enter theatres this year. However, the biopic on legendary Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand has been facing constant delays in taking off. After numerous names were attached to the project in the past, we now hear that Ronnie Screwvala has hired Abhishek Chaubey to write and direct the biopic.

An entertainment portal reports that Abhishek Chaubey, along with his team of writers, will start developing the script for the biopic soon. As far as the cast of the biopic is concerned, the makers plan to begin that process once the script of the film is ready. An official announcement confirming the development is also awaited.

For the unversed, Dhyan Chand, also known as the Wizard of Hockey, represented the Indian Hockey team from 1926 to 1948 and scored over 400 goals in the 185 matches. In his illustrious career, he won three Olympic Gold Medal in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
