“Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” is a biographical film featuring Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan. Helmed by Om Raut, the historical drama is releasing with sky high expectations of the audience.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is the first big-ticket, out-and-out commercial film of the year 2020. Toplined by Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan, the historical drama is based on the life of warrior Tanaji Malusare who was the military leader of Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. Directed by filmmaker Om Raut, the much-awaited film enters theatres amid great pre-release buzz. Let’s find out how the film actually is.
Story: Tanhaji Malusare (Ajay Devgn) had made a promise to his dying father that he would do anything possible to drive off the Mughals from his country, who was then ruled by barbaric Aurangzeb (Luke Kenny). Years pass by and Tanhaji becomes the military leader and a close friend of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha empire. While Aurangzeb aspires to expand his empire down South by conquering the Marathas, Tanhaji gives his blood and sweat to uphold the Maratha flag. Soon, he finds himself in the battle field with a cunning, cold-blooded Mughal commander Udaybhan Rathore (Saif Ali Khan). What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Critical Analysis: There is no doubt about it that Ajay Devgn is one of the finest actors that we have in our country. Ever since making his debut almost three decades ago, he has taken up characters that challenge him as an actor. But many would agree that as a producer he is even more daring. As a producer, Devgn has always tried to push the envelope. Be it Raju Chacha (200), U Me Aur Hum (2008), Shivaay (2016) and now Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, the actor-producer has never shied away from taking risks and introducing new technology in cinema that Indian audience hardly sees. His latest offering could be a game-changer as far as the use of VFX in Hindi cinema is concerned.
Apart from great VFX and CGI, what impresses you most in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is the sheer hard work that director Om Raut has put into making an unforgettable film. He researched on the subject for close to five years and that clearly shows in the movie. From magnificent sets to glimmering costumes to high-octane action sequences, everything is picture perfect in Tanhaji. The narrative keeps your eyes glued to the screen from the word go.
Coming to performances, Ajay Devgn is at the top of his game again. The character of braveheart Maratha warrior Tanhaji suits him to a tee. The actor conveys a lot through his eyes than actions and that is something only Ajay Devgn can do. Kajol in the role of his wife looks perfect. Though her role is brief, she makes most of it and delivers a memorable performance. The actor who stands out from the rest in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is Saif Ali Khan. As menacing, unmerciful Udaybhan, Khan manages to deliver an extraordinary performance that will be remembered for a long time. The supporting cast of the film is also impactful. Sharad Kelkar as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is really convincing.
Final Verdict: Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is powered by great storytelling, brilliant cinematography, amazing artwork and, above all, extraordinary performances from Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan. This tale about a warrior who kept his country before his family is a must watch. I am going with 4 stars.
