Dear Comrade
Starcast: Vijay Deverakonda, Rashmika Madanna,...
Director: Bharat Camma
Vijay Deverakonda's multilingual film Dear Comrade was released this week. Just like the opening sequence the entire flick heavily relies on Vijay's on-screen performance. The movie I should say have the weirdest opening that a film has ever gotten in the history. The hero is introduced in a restroom, taking a leak and the later breaks down. And this continues for minutes.
Directed by Bharat Camma, Dear Comrade is a story of Bobby and Lilly, played by Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna respectively. The story is about their relationship, the ups and downs in their life and how Bobby plays the role of Comrade in his lady loves life.
Bobby is similar to Arjun Reddy. Vijay's previous character in the film with the same name. Bobby is also a rebel and notably, he ain't a rebel without a cause. Does that sentence click you somewhere? Yes, it is from the film Arjun Reddy. Bobby fights for students and their rights. While on the other hand, Lilly doesn't like the impulsive character of Bobby. Bobby then falls in love with Lilly.
Vijay Deverakonda had struck the right notes with his acting and it indicates what the actor has in store for the audience in his future ventures. The audience will be amused with the way Bobby puts his anger in good use. But that leaves me with one important question. The same question that I had when I watched Arjun Reddy. Is so much of anger needed to do good things? Is it certainly drawing the same liberal picture in the impulsive mind of youth as the director is intending to? Well, that's something only time could reveal. But in my opinion, this much anger is not needed.
Coming back to the film, Rashmika puts an impressive performance in the movie as she plays a state-level cricketer. When Rashmika faces a threat of sexual harassment at her workplace, the sequence sheds some light on how timid and fearful is the workspace for women in this country. I felt like that entire sequence was as close to realism as the movie could get. But then comes the real problem with the film. The sexual harassment sequence and the rest of the film was so detached with each other it never felt like that it belonged to the same movie.
The film speaks about how important self-respect is for humans and how strong support backing the victim could do a hell lot of changes in her life. But all these important messages are thrown out of the window with the non-syncing performance of Vijay Deverakonda. His performance is great but it overpowers the true meaning of the film. The second half of the film feels like a drag.
The other notable performance of the film comes in the form of its music and background score. Justin Prabhakaran does an impeccable job with his God gifted talent.
Bharat Kamma had an important script but the true meaning got lost in the oblivion of mass performances. I could say that the film is just a one-time watch, just for the excellent performances by the character.
