The Netflix's great series Sex Education has come back. Sex Education tells a story about Otis, who has no experience about sex, try to help his schoolmates to overcome sexual problems by basing on some advice of his mother, a sex therapist. The hit not only received positive reactions from both critics and viewers but also raised interesting conversations among netizens.
Setting in the 80s background, from the technology, costume, to character's name, Sex Education brings a never-out-of-date feeling to viewers when comparing to similar contemporary shows. Also, the director hints that sex education is a non-limited phenomenon in any local region when he adds the very US factors into a UK school including pastel-colored lockers, ‘Breakfast Club’ and no school uniform.
"It’s very much a bold stylistic choice. And it works, it is its own world, which people are invited to step into.", shared the actor Alistair Petrie.
Talking about the young dynamic cast including Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, and Aimee Lou Wood, it's a wise choice when most of the cast are newbies, which draws the attention of viewers to the content and messages without being distracted. Though being on screen for the first time, the young cast's performance doesn't make viewers disappointed.
Besides the young cast, there's a prominent name need to mention, Gillian Anderson, a monument in early big hits about sex education.
“She’s very giving as an actor,” It’s nice when people take the time to be like that when they really don’t have to. I’m no one so she could have blanked me the whole time, but she didn’t”, Connor Swindells shared his experiences in collaborating with the legend.
Also, the viewers are contented with the show's various content. Not only featuring stars from multiple ethnic backgrounds, but the show also has colorful themes including LGBT+, gender experimentation, subversion of common stereotypes, and same-sex appeal.
Despite owning 80s vibe, Sex Education always reminds the viewers of modern times by adding Pornhub, current currency, Snapchat, Grizzly Bear, Ezra Furman, and Beth Ditto subtly.
About the soundtrack, Sex Education tells an old story with immortal music, namely Asleep, Take On Me, and Dancing With Myself.
Sex Education received compliments on its frank conversations about sex. “A lot of the time, all these sexual problems, they’re actually mirroring other problems,” Connor Swindells explained. “So I think, you’re actually talking about those other things, rather than an erect penis or viagra or scampi. It’s just a chance to talk about the deeper stuff, but in a crude way,” he added.
“When I first read it, it took me straight back to being 17, and it made me laugh and wince and all the rest of it… and as adults, we’re still trying to figure out who the hell we are, we’re just a little better at hiding it,” said Alistair.
