This January, Michael Jackson was the inspiration for Virgil Abloh’s Fall 2019 Louis Vuitton Menswear Collection. Right at the beginning of the show, one could certainly feel the vibes of the King of Pop. It started with Thriller as background music and ended with a rendition of Wanna Be Startin Somethin'. According to Abloh, this collection was an ode to the prominent singer.
However, the man who inspired Abloh raised a storm of controversy due to the release of Leaving Neverland. This latest HBO's documentary unveiled the heartbreaking story of two men who were abused by Michael Jackson at the age of 7 and 10. As a consequence, Virgil Abloh decided to remove all the Michael Jackson-inspired pieces from his Louis Vuitton Fall Collection.
In his latest statement, Abloh said that he knew the fashion show had caused emotional reactions under the influence of Leaving Neverland.
Nevertheless, the artistic director of Louis Vuitton added that they only referred to Michael Jackson as a pop star in the show.
Moreover, Louis Vuitton's chairman Michael Burke said that they found the documentary troubling and disturbing. As Louis Vuitton highly values child safety and welfare, they are fully committed to advocating this cause.
In Virgil Abloh’s Fall Collection 2019, there were several pieces inspired by the King of Pop. The collection portrayed Michael's coming-of-age story, using a haunting edition of his song as the soundtrack. It featured Abloh's signature streetwear looks from bucket hats, leather jackets to iconic diamond-encrusted gloves. In a previous interview, Abloh once said that he would feel extremely inspired if he listened to Michael's songs while working on his design.
