British-American period television series Harlots is currently all rage with the overwhelming amount of sex in the very opening scenes that are stunned a lot of viewers. However, the audiences are also extremely shocked at the scenes where Margaret Wells sells her 15-year-old daughter’s virginity before saying that she had also done the same with Charlotte - another daughter of the brothel madam - when she was 12.
However, such relatively disturbing scenes somehow reflect the harsh reality of the sex trade taking place in Georgian England. Children, mostly in their early teens, had to work the streets and their mothers even put the virginity of their daughters for sale. The price was up to £9,000.
The drama will give the audience a glimpse of the dark side of Georgian prostitution where girls are considered items for sex trading.
In a scene in the series, Wells can be seen selling off her go-to daughter to the highest bidder.
In a nutshell, the film takes the social background of London in 1763 when women’s opportunities for economic enhancement are through marriage or sex work. The brothels in the city are run by determined businesswomen like Margaret Wells or Lydia Quigley. The series revolves around the high determination of Wells to change her life quality as the lives of other members in her “family.” She decides to move to Greek Street to easily serve the wealthy clientele. She has to compete with madame Quigley when moving to Greek Street.
The first season premiered in March 2017 on ITV Encore in the UK and on Hulu channel in the US. It was also renewed for the second and third installments.
