Late actor Chadwick Boseman has received a nomination for a posthumous Academy Award. For the unknown, he bagged the nomination for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, adapted from the famous August Wilson play.
In fact, for the same part, he had previously won one Golden Globe award.
Boseman passed away while the film was still in post-production
The George C. Wolfe’s directorial narrates the journey of Ma Rainey, a famed blues singer in the ’20s. Chadwick Boseman portrays Levee Green, a skilled trumpet player. The character hopes to escape from Rainey to secure his very own record deal.
Unfortunately, he left the world in grief and shock after he passed away. The film was in post-production when the news broke out.
For the unknown, the Black Panther actor lost to colon cancer on August 28, 2020. His wife and family surrounded him at the time.
Chadwick Boseman broke stereotypes as he was the first leading black superhero in Marvel movies. He played in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
He was supposed to return with his role in Black Panther 2. It was tentatively slated to release in May 2022.
Chadwick Boseman leaves a powerful legacy both in reel and real life. The passion the actor had for his community made him a hero in real life to many. That passion urged him to pick roles that celebrated and uplifted black voices.
He was also famous for depicting historical figures
For those uninitiated, the actor was also popular for his roles as historical figures. Some of the parts he played were Get On Up’s James Brown, Marshall’s Thurgood Marshall, or 42’s Jackie Robinson. In fact, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marks his last performance on the screen.
Other actors who are nominated in the same category as Best Actor in a Leading Role include Anthony Hopkins for The Father, Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Steven Yeun for Minari, and Gary Oldman for Mank.
The 93rd Academy Awards will be broadcast on 25 April 2021.
