Irrfan Khan may not have starred in hundreds of movies in his storied career, but he certainly headlined some of the most memorable films of Indian and world cinema. One of the most notable films in his filmography remains director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Haasil (2003) which has gained cult status over the years.
Also starring Jimmy Sheirgill and Hrishita Bhatt in lead roles, Haasil completes 17 years of its theatrical release today on 16th May, 2020. Director Tigmanshu Dhulia walks down the memory lane and remembers his close friend and colleague Irrfan Khan when the film clocks 17 years of its release.
Talking to a popular publication, Dhulia said that he locked the title of the film after hours of brainstorming at the rented apartment of Irrfan Khan. He said that he remembers the title came to his mind at the rented Evershine Nagar flat of the actor. The film completes 17 years today, a film which is an ode to their friendship of 34 years and it will never end. Missing his late friend, the director said that he will always guide him.
Years later, when Irrfan Khan received the prestigious National Film Award for his powerful performance in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar (2012), the actor said that he thought he should have got the award for Haasil which was his first film with Tigmanshu Dhulia. Then he thought he would get it for Mira Nair’s The Namesake (2006). So it has been a fairly lengthy time span of disappointments.
Irrfan Khan, who has a number of award-winning performances to his credit, was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour in 2018. The actor had undergone treatment in the UK and returned to India in 2019 and starred in Maddock Films Angrezi Medium (2020). He breathed his last in a Mumbai hospital on April 29, 2020. Khan is survived by his wife and two sons.
