Durgavati is an official remake of successful Telugu film Bhaagamathie (2018). Starring leading Telugu actress Anushka Shetty in the lead role, the horror film set the box-office on fire upon its release last year. Made on a moderate budget of Rs. 35 crores, Bhaagamathie went on to rake in approximately Rs. 70 crores domestically, thereby becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

The makers were earlier denying the reports of remaking the film in Hindi. However, the project was confirmed when superstar Akshay Kumar came onboard as a co-producer and announced it by sharing a picture featuring the makers and the female lead, Bhumi Pednekar. The latest update on the project is that Bhumi Pednekar will start shooting for it on January 14, 2020.

The makers have decided to shoot the film at real locations in Madhya Pradesh. They will also be shooting at various tourist spots including Moti Mahal, Sadar Manzil, and a few municipal schools. According to sources, Bhumi Pednekar has already started preparing for her role in the remake. She has began reading sessions with director Ashok G. Her look in the film is yet to be finalized; the team is working on locking the look as well. T-Series Films, Abundantia Entertainment and Cape Of Good Films are jointly producing Durgavati.
