The Slumdog Millionaire’s London-born star has strongly criticised the suggestions in which he’s indulging in the “cultural appropriation” as he plays Indian roles.
Born in the Harrow with his parents from Gujarati, Dev Patel reveals that he copes with criticism for performing parts of the Indian roles in movies, including Hotel Mumbai which is an upcoming drama focusing on the terror attack in 2008 on a five-star hotel named Taj Mahal Palace.
Dev Patel acts as the Sikh waiter who comes from a slum in Mumbai, and he risks the life to protect a hundred guests - those are trapped inside a hotel, told:
The 28-year-old English actor continued,
Talking with San Francisco Chronicle, Dev - who acted as a hotel manager in the series titled Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - revealed that the fact is he is making great effort to have a better understanding of himself and his heritage, to solve and understand things, in the film options he makes. That has been the biggest thing for him in repeatedly coming to India.
He spoke that he was caught attention to this story involving the Taj Mahal Palace attack and other places in Mumbai. And, it resulted in the unexpected deaths of up to 174 people, since the hotel demonstrated the “microcosm of India”.
He said,
Dev Patel, who had his first appearance in a TV drama named Skins, acting like the Muslim teenager with Pakistani origin, disclosed that the staff’s bravery had been surprised him like Arjun, his character.
