Alia Bhatt is marking off one very important wish from her wish-list. Ever since making her acting debut with Dharma Productions’ college-caper Student of the Year (2012), she wanted to join forces with eminent filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The two even announced their maiden collaboration, Inshallah, in 2019 and were thrilled to work together. However, when the male lead Salman Khan walked out of it at the last moment, the film got shelved. Sanjay Leela Bhansali then went on to sign Alia Bhatt for another film called Gangubai Kathiawadi.
In the period drama, Alia Bhatt is playing the titular character. The movie started rolling a couple of days ago. The latest update has it that the team will soon begin shooting for the next schedule of the much-awaited film. Sharing the development, a source close to the project informs a publication that the team was on New Year’s break and everyone will get back soon to begin the next schedule of Gangubai Kathiawadi.
The same source goes on to add that Alia Bhatt along with the entire cast and crew will resume the shoot on 5th January. Gangubai Kathiawadi is being shot in Mumbai, where a set of the notorious red-light area Kamathipura of the 40s has been recreated in the Goregaon Film City. The team is apparently looking at finishing the shoot by May this year, with the release being scheduled for 11th September, 2020.
For the uninitiated, Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on the life of a young woman who was forced into prostitution at a very young age. The movie is based on a chapter from well-known author S Hussain Zaidi’s popular book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
Besides Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia Bhatt is also working on Dharma Productions’ heavily delayed film Brahmastra and her father Mahesh Bhatt’s directorial comeback Sadak 2 alongside Sanjay Dutt, Pooja Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur.
