On unveiling about this offer, Mindy Kaling said that she was offered a position on Saturday Night Live when she was part-way through season two of the NBC show.
Mindy Kaling, who has been much known for playing the character Kelly Kapoor in the popular series The Office, disclosed her dream was to work for Saturday Night Live and it was a piece of good news that she received an invitation to take part in SNL’s audition when the actress was still on show The Office.
On unveiling about this offer, Mindy Kaling said that she was offered a position on Saturday Night Live when she was part-way through season two of the NBC show. She talked with Greg Daniels, showrunner of The Office to ask him whether she could take a turn trying to get on this well-known variety show. In addition, Kaling also revealed to him that getting cast for SNL was her “childhood dream”.
Appearing at The Daily Beast, the 39-year-old actor said, "And he's like, you have a job there, I don't understand why you want to leave. And I said, I know, it's just this’s my childhood dream”. She added that Daniels seemed relatively cool about this and consented to allow Kaling out of The Office’s contract if the actress was cast on SNL as the performer.
However, she said after the audition, Lorne Michaels, who is the producer and creator of SNL, offered her the position of a writer, not a performer. Nonetheless, he also gave some hint that if she could stay long enough, there would be a high possibility for Mindy Kaling to graduate to the cast and become a performer. Hence, she thought this was quite exciting but pretty dangled to her.
About Daniels, he didn’t allow Mindy to leave the show as she was not cast as the SNL’s performer and that’s their deal. It’s understandable with what Greg Daniels did because nobody would want a talented actress like Mindy Kaling to say goodbye to the show.
