Manmeet Grewal, an Indian television actor known for his work in such successful shows as Aadat Se Majboor and Kuldeepak, committed suicide at his residence in Navi Mumbai on Friday night. According to reports, the 32-year-old actor was buried deep in debt and had no employment amid the Coronavirus lockdown.
Manmeet Grewal was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his bedroom by his wife. His wife tried her best to save him, but could not succeed. Despite her ceaseless screams, her neighbours did not help her because they thought that Manmeet Grewal may have contracted Coronavirus and hence committed suicide.
Manjit Singh, a close friend of the actor, told a publication that Manmeet Grewal was very normal on Friday evening. He went to his room and locked it from inside. That time his wife was in the kitchen making food. When she heard the noise of a chair, she rushed to the bedroom and held him. She screamed a lot for the help and neighbours did come hearing the noise but no one came forward to help or get him down.
After some time, a security guard came forward and brought the body down by cutting the dupatta which Manmeet Grewal used to hang himself from the ceiling fan. He was then taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
An officer from the police station said in his report that Manmeet Grewal was in so much of trouble that they had mortgaged golden ornaments. He did not have money to pay ₹ 8500 as rent. The actor is survived by his wife and parents. His parents stay in Punjab.
Ever since India went into complete lockdown and the entertainment industry came to a halt, several actors and workers who depended on daily income are facing it hard to make both ends meet.
