The South Indian cinema has leaped when actresses get opportunities to portray more powerful and inspirational roles. Here are the six best women-centric films that South Indian cinema has come up with so far.

Over the past few years, Bollywood has witnessed more and more women-centric films which are empowered by actresses like Alia Bhatt, Kangana Ranaut, Vidya Balan, and many others.

The wave of women-centric films has finally hit the South cinema where actresses like Nayanthara, Samantha Akkineni, Keerthy Suresh, and Trisha are making tremendous changes with their inspiring roles. All those films depict women’s images with impressive strength, confidence, and independence.

As men have held power over the South cinema for the longest time, most of the films are the show of a man surrounded by some ‘glam dolls.’ The South Indian cinema, however, has leaped when actresses get opportunities to portray more powerful and inspirational roles.

1. 22 Female Kottayam (2012)

With Rima Kallingal’s stellar performance, 22 Female Kottayam has struck a chord with South audience as one of the first films in women’s film genre. The movie reflected the reality of rape and live-in relationship.

2. Aramm (2017)

Aramm is a compelling story about a female democrat named Madhivadhani (played by Nayanthara). The district collector makes every efforts to help people in a village deal with the water shortage issue.

3. Mahanati (2018)

Being a biopic of legendary superstar Savitri, Mahanati is one of the most striking film releases last year. The film features Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Akkineni, and Vijay Deverakonda in the lead roles.

4. U Turn (2018)

One year back, Samantha Akkineni once overwhelmed the audience with her dominant portrayal in U Turn. The movie tells a story about an intern journalist who discovers accidents on a flyover but then gets involved in a murder case.

5. How Old Are You (2014)

After taking an extended break from films, Manju Warrier returned to the silver screen with How Old Are You. The actress played the role of a mother and wife who sets her dream aside for her family. It was a story which any Indian women can find themselves in it.

6. Take Off (2016)

The movie based on the real story of a nurse who got stuck in Iraq after the ISIS attack in 2014. Apart from Parvathy, it also stars Fahadh Faasil and Kunchacko Boban in the lead roles.
