In a bold proclamation that has ignited excitement among fans worldwide, JB Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, has described the upcoming Harry Potter TV series as the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming overall. Speaking at an event in London announcing the launch of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland on March 26, Perrette emphasized the project's scale, calling it the streaming event of the decade.

Ambitious Adaptation Set for 2027 Premiere
The highly anticipated adaptation of JK Rowling's beloved book series is set to premiere in early 2027 on HBO Max. Unlike the original film franchise, which grossed over $7.7 billion at the box office, this version aims to delve deeper into the wizarding world across more than seven seasons. Each season will correspond to one of the books, allowing for expanded storytelling that captures elements omitted from the movies.
Production is already underway at Leavesden Studios in the UK, where Perrette recently visited and praised the meticulous detail in the sets and development. He highlighted how the series elevates theatrical production standards to new heights for television. Mark Mylod, known for his work on Succession, will executive produce and direct multiple episodes, in association with Bronte Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
Casting announcements have begun generating buzz, with young actor Dominic McLaughlin stepping into the iconic role of Harry Potter. Warner Bros. Discovery executives, including HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, have confirmed the project's ambitious timeline, initially promised by CEO David Zaslav to span a decade. This long-term commitment underscores the company's confidence in recapturing the cultural phenomenon that defined a generation through books, films, and merchandise.
High Expectations and Industry Optimism
Perrette's enthusiasm reflects broader industry optimism amid Warner Bros. Discovery's recent challenges, including acquisition-related turbulence. He noted that the series, combined with HBO Max's European expansion, provides motivating goals for the team. Analysts suggest the show could set new benchmarks for viewership, potentially surpassing records held by hits like Game of Thrones or Stranger Things, given the franchise's enduring global appeal.
As anticipation builds, the Harry Potter TV series positions itself not just as a reboot but as a landmark in streaming entertainment, promising to enchant both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
