This weekend, it looks like the entire moviegoing world will get its chance.

LOS ANGELES (April 29, 2026) The fashion world is about to take over the multiplexes. Disney and 20th Century Studios announced Wednesday that The Devil Wears Prada 2 is tracking for a massive worldwide opening weekend of nearly $180 million when it bows in theaters this Friday, giving the summer movie season its first major blockbuster boost.

The sequel reunites original stars Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, with Hathaway returning as Andy Sachs, now a successful editor at her own influential lifestyle publication, and Streep reprising her iconic role as the formidable Miranda Priestly. Emily Blunt also comes back as the sharp-tongued Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at Runway magazine. Director David Frankel, who helmed the 2006 original, returns behind the camera.

Box Office Projections

Early tracking shows the film opening to between $65 million and $70 million domestically, with international markets adding another $110 million. That global figure would place it among the strongest non-franchise openings of the year and easily the biggest for a live-action comedy sequel in recent memory.

Plot Summary

The plot picks up 20 years after the events of the first film. Andy, now running her own digital media empire, finds herself drawn back into Miranda's orbit when a major merger threatens both their careers. What follows is a high-stakes battle of ambition, loyalty, and killer heels set against the backdrop of New York Fashion Week, Milan, and Paris.

New cast members include Zendaya as a rising social-media influencer who becomes Andy's protégé, and Simon Helberg as a veteran fashion critic who provides much of the comic relief.

Pre-sales have been exceptionally strong, particularly among women aged 25 to 54. Social media buzz has been nonstop since the first trailer dropped in February, with the hashtag #DevilWearsPrada2 trending for three consecutive days and generating more than 1.2 billion impressions across TikTok and Instagram.

The summer box office has been relatively quiet so far. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is expected to dominate the marketplace for at least two weekends before Mission: Impossible 8 arrives in early June.

Critical Reception

Critics who attended early screenings have described the sequel as "sharper and more relevant than the original" and "a love letter to fashion that still skewers the industry it celebrates." The film carries a PG-13 rating.

With a reported production budget of $120 million, the sequel represents a significant investment. Studio insiders say they are confident the film will cross the $400 million global mark by the end of its theatrical run.

As Miranda Priestly herself might say, everyone wants to be us. This weekend, it looks like the entire moviegoing world will get its chance.
