“Malang” Review: An Edge-Of-The-Seat Thriller High On Thrill & Suspense

Mohnish Singh |Feb 07, 2020

“Malang” stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu on its ensemble cast. Helmed by Mohit Suri, the thriller enters theatres on 7th February, 2020.

Malang caught a lot of eyeballs with its pacey trailer which the makers released in December. The film reunites Aditya Roy Kapur with filmmaker Mohit Suri after a long gap of seven years. The duo last worked together on Aashiqui 2. The film, which was a sequel to the 1990 musical romantic drama Aashiqui, emerged as one of the highest grossing movies of 2013. Since the trailer of Malang received good response, the audience is really looking forward to the film. Here is what STARBIZ reviewer has to say about the movie.

Malang
Disha Patani & Aditya Roy Kapur team up for the first time in Malang

Story: Advait Thakur (Aditya Roy Kapoor) lands in Goa to escape his complicated family life and meets a free spirited but simple girl Sara (Disha Patani) who believes in living life from one high to the other. After spending some time together, the duo realizes that they are in love. However, their idyllic world changes forever when their path crosses with two police officers – Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor) and Michael Rodrigues (Kunal Kemmu). What happens next forms the crux of the story.

Malang
Aditya Roy Kapur & Disha Patani's chemistry is infectious in Malang

Critical Analysis: Aditya Roy Kapur, who was last seen in Kalank (2019) delivers one of his career’s best performances. He is highly impressive in the movie which has a lot of twists and turns to keep you hooked to the screen. His performance is restrained but immensely impactful. The actor has worked really hard to get into the skin of his character and that shows clearly on the screen. His physical transformation adds weight to the portion where he is seen on a killing spree. As far as Disha Patani is concerned, she looks gorgeous throughout and pulls off her character really well. The actress does complete justice to her role. The chemistry between the lead pair is crackling.

Anil Kapoor plays a cop after a long time, and he fits the bill like anything. At times, you may feel that he is overdoing it, but his character graph is such that it required that kind of madness. Kunal Khemu surprises with his act. His character is written impeccably well and he portrays it with complete sincerity.

Malang 1
Anil Kapoor & Kunal Khemi also play important roles in Malang

Malang has been shot beautifully in Goa. The music of the film synchs well with the narrative, but it does not create a long-lasting impact. The writers have worked hard on the scripts and that is really commendable. There are ample of twists and turns that keep you invested from the word go. Having said that, the first half of the film is slow as compared to the second one.

Final Verdict: Malang will mostly appeal to youngsters. Its fast pace, great cinematography, strong screenplay and impressive performances from all the lead actors make it a one-time watch. I am going with 3 stars.
