If you have ever read any novels or stories written by Franz Kafka, you should have ended up with confusion, frustration, depression or even the complexity of them all. In fact, the Czechian novelist is famous for the darkness which spread its shadow throughout all of his works.

Born in 1883 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Franz Kafka grew up in a middle-class family with his father as a businessman. Living within an isolated minority of German-speaking population, Franz had no communication with the major group of Czech-speaking population in Prague.
Despite his deep knowledge and understanding of the nation’s culture and literature, there was no room for him in this own country. The feeling of being an outcast has been reflected in almost all of his writing noticeably in protagonists.
Kafka’s great depression also came from his domineering father who was a successful and powerful father. While his characteristic was inherited from his dreamy and sensitive mother, his childhood was overshadowed by his imposing father.
The novelist started writing from a very young age with little plays for family gatherings. He attended Karl Ferdinand University of Prague to study German literature and law. While working as a lawyer, he started writing his first published works in recognition of the suffering of poor workers in 1909 followed by a collection of short stories published in 1913. All of his stories were inspired by lives around Prage.
Kafka's greatest novels are The Trial (1925), The Castle (1926), and Amerika (1927). In fact, he asked his friend Max to destroy all of his works. Fortunately, Max decided to ignore his request and published them to the world.
His first novel The Trial (1925) revolves around a man who was sentenced by a mysterious court. He tried in vain to find the guilt he had and the nature of the court but ended up dying in ignorance.
Kafka had started to face severe health problems since 1920 that he had to retire at the age of 40. He finished his last novel The Little Woman which is a happy-ending story before his death in 1924.
Despite the short period of his existence, Franz Kafka was able to create some of the greatest literary works of the 20 century. His novels reflect his own life of struggling with fear and isolation and a concise hidden message that 'the incomprehensible cannot be comprehended.'
