Harry Styles could star in Disney’s hugely anticipated live-action remake of The Little Mermaid (1989). According to reports, the makers of the film have approached Harry Styles to play the popular character of Prince Eric in the film. However, the talks have just begun and the singer-actor is yet to sign the project on the dotted line.
For the unversed, Harry Styles arrested eyeballs for his debut acting performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war film Dunkirk. If he agrees to be part of The Little Mermaid, he would romance actress Halle Bailey, the young singer who represents half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, in the film.
Bailey is playing Princess Ariel, the rebellious mermaid daughter of King Triton who longs to live on dry land.
The original film, which hit the marquee in the year 1989, had no song featuring Prince Eric. However, since Harry Styles is a singer of international repute, you never know if the makers let him sing for his character in the film.
Styles was the youngest member of the British boy-band One Direction, with Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group split in 2016.
Talking about other cast members in talks for the film, the Crazy Rich Asians (2010) actor Awkwafina has been reportedly offered the role of Scuttle. Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula and Wonder star Jacob Tremblay has been approached for the role of Flounder.
To be helmed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid is expected to roll into theatres in 2020. The film will have music from the original 1989 animated classic, as well as new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken.
