Emma Watson Writes An Emotional Letter To An Indian Woman Who Died After Being Denied An Abortion

Not only is one of the most well-beloved film star in the world but Emma Watson also has a role to play as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. She frequently uses her public platform to call out advocating for women’s rights. She has positively taken part in many organizations that fight against gender inequality and feminism.

Recently, the “Harry Potter” star’s has expressed her concern about the significance of reproductive rights for women.  She wrote a passionate open letter to a woman who died due to being denied an abortion.

The famous actress tweeted a message to Dr.Halappanavar, who passed away in Ireland following a septic miscarriage in 2012. The India female went to the hospital with severe back pain. However, the doctors refused abortion due to Ireland's historic abortion referendum. The act of abortion stated that any threat to the pregnant women was a criminal offense, even led to life imprisonment. She delivered a stillborn female child and died later.

Her death triggered off a wave of protests abortion laws in many countries and provoking an outcry against preventable deaths like Halappanavar and others.

The activist required lawmakers to enact laws that allow a prompt abortion in case the mother is in danger.

Now, the government of Ireland revealed Eighth Amendment, which restricted heavily abortions.

A moving letter to Indian women and the world

The female activist penned, "You didn’t want to become the face of a movement; you just wanted a procedure that would have saved your life….”

She made repeatedly a “call to action” and “call to society”, for this case would never happen again. “historic feminist victory which emboldens the fight for reproductive justice everywhere” is still rare, she emphasized.

Although Halappanavar had slept forever, “many of us woke”; therefore, we still have so many things to do and “we continue the fight for reproductive justice”, the actor wrote.

Emma Watson is an inspiring person that never hesitate to speak out about reproductive injustice and women rights. We remain hopeful that someday anyone regardless of gender will have equal access to life-saving medical services no matter where they come from.
