Biggest Questions Emerging After New ‘Captain Marvel’ Trailer

The second trailer for “Captain Marvel” is full of tons of fascinating little details that we aren’t sure what to make of yet.

Marvel Studios has released the second trailer for “Captain Marvel,” the first female-led superhero film as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film revolves around Carol Danvers – a woman possessed superhuman power, finding herself in a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel will be a prequel, set long before the events of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Therefore, there’s a lot of questions emerging from this two-minute trailer.

1. How is Carol Danvers important at the Center of the Story?

In the trailer, while speaking to Nick Fury (an eye-patchless Samuel L. Jackson), Carol Danvers says “something in my past is the key to all of this.” “All of this” here might serve as the crux of the film’s conflict, which involves the war between two alien races: the Kree and the shape-shifting Skrulls.

But why would her past be so important?

Audiences can see that Carol at first was regular human before being converted into hybrid being or a half-human and half-alien superhero due to some type of injury. Did she encounter a harsh battle? Did she catch sight of something she shouldn’t have seen? Why did the Kree erase out her memory?

The post-credits scene saw Nick Fury called her when he realized something. We can guess that if the upcoming film is connected importantly with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and its sequel Avengers 4, Carol’s past may be the key to save the universe from being destroyed by the Mad Titan.

2. Is Earth so Central to the Greater Galactic Situation?

To some certain extent, Earth has an important connection to events happening in the galaxy. It was true when Thanos tried to conquer the planet two times.

We all know that the Kree, “noble warrior heroes” have intervened with humanity for thousand years, and that was the way inhumans were created. After the critical battle between the Frost Giants and the forces of Asgard, Odin decided Earth was the best place to conceal the Space Stone.

The Space Stone was kept safe for many centuries. Moreover, Earth also became the best place to hide another Infinity Stone (the Time Stone), and it remained to be hidden safely for thousands of years by Mystic Arts.

3.How long was Carol actually with the Kree?

“Captain Marvel” is set at some point in the 1990s, and it starts off with Carol Danvers already serving as a member of the Kree Starforce. But she seems to have memories of living on Earth too – an Air Force pilot and as a little girl at the beach.

We wonder why Danvers could still look young although she had worked for Air Force?  It is guessed that her young appearance is the result of the time travel machine.

Carol is clearly already bleeding green when the Kree find her in the dirt, therefore, the Kree might put space magic into her bloodstream, which remains her young look and extends longevity.

The Kree is known for living longer than other creatures in space.

4.Why does Carol think she’s a Kree?

At first, Danvers doesn’t think that she is from Earth, the same to the character Peter Quill in MCU, who thought he was fully human before realizing that his dad was a genuine Celestial.

Carol thinks she’s a full-on alien, but upon her return to Earth, she realizes that there’s more to her past than she realized. Carol is not only part Kree but was engineered to be “superior,” could she be a result of additional genetic engineering and involve with Skrull DNA?

5. Who is the real villain?

The crux of this story focus on the war between the Kree and the Skrull, both likely have intentions of conquering Earth. Carol is introduced as a member of Starforce, a Kree military Spec Ops team, and she only evolves into a “superhero” after developing some level of sympathy for Earth especially after she pieces together all of her memories. There’s a blurry line between “the good guys” and “the bad guys”.

It is true that Annette Bening will play the villain role. There is a scene in which Benning’s unveiled character breaks down Carol’s origins to her and Carol replies: “I’m not gonna fight your war. I’m gonna end it”.

6. Why would the Skrull Empire repeatedly target Earth?

Skrulls have been around in the Marvel Comics Universe for a very long time. In fact, they are considered the oldest empire in the Universe’s history followed by the Kree, beginning as a peaceful species. If Annette Bening’s Kree character is the actual villain, the MCU Skrulls could be less villainous than they appear.

But they had a fleet and were ready to do what it takes to conquer Earth.  Maybe they know an Infinity Stone hidden in Earth could take on the Kree?

Earth seems to be really mysterious…
