Many experts suggest that Deepika Padukone's bad PR stunt by visiting JNU led to drop in box office collections of "Chhapaak"

One of the most ambitious project of Deepika Padukone, Chhapaak has not earned much at the Box Office. But the actress is satisfied with the response film has received. During a promotional event, Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar echoed a same voice of satisfaction the film has done in terms of earnings. Chhapaak clashed with Ajay Devgn's film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and it faced quiet a heat from the audience. Tanhaji earned Rs 116 crore in its first week while Chhapaak managed to earn Rs 26 crore in first seven days.

This film is first for the actress as a producer and also a first film after her marriage to Ranveer Singh. Experts also suggest that Deepika Padukone's visit to JNU led to backlash in film earnings. Several right wing groups have condemned Deepika Padukone for visiting JNU during her film release. They termed it as a PR stunt and trolled her on internet. Meghna Gulzar said that they had expected these numbers keeping in mind the environment of the release. She also pointed out that Deepika Padukone has set earnings to Rs 300 crore film and if she would have been chasing numbers, she would have opted out of Chhapaak.

Deepika Padukone also spoke on the same lines and said that the numbers are quite similar to her film Piku. She claimed that the intent of the film was very different. It was not a commercial film but today the audience has been fed that Rs 100 crore movie is a hit film. She also said that the numbers are at par as compared to spending on the film. In the second week, Chhapaak will face a new release Jai Mummy Di starring starring Sunny Singh, Sonnalli Seygall, Supriya Pathak and Poonam Dhillon. The film has so far not received much appreciation from the critics. It would be interesting to see if the audience steps out to see Chhapaak in the second week with less film release choices.
