2018 was one really good year for Bollywood with a ton of smash-hit movies as well as remarkable performances from stars. Low budget movies from various genres such as Badhaai Ho, Stree, Raazi, Andhadhun and Mulk won top place. The audience neglected star vehicles namely Zero, Race 3 and Thugs of Hindostan and showed their preferences for the good content clearly. Rohit Shetty’s Simmba completed a perfect 2018.

The Accidental Prime Minister

Date of release: 11th January

Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte and written by Mayank Tewari, the movie is based on the 2014 memoir of Sanjaya Baru. This biographical movie will tell a story of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s political life. Anupam Kher will star as PM Manmohan and Akshaye will play as political commentator Sanjaya Baru. The teaser highlighted Manmohan Singh’s alleged conflicts with his party and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Helmed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, the movie delves deep into the Congress party’s internal politics.

Uri

Date of release: 11th January

After dominating the year 2018 with movies such as Sanju, Lust Stories, Manmarziyaan and Raazi, Vicky Kaushal is all ready to impress the movie lovers in his upcoming military movie “Uri”, where he will play as an army officer.

Directed by debutant Aditya Dhar, the movie is based on the surgical strike carried out by the Indian army on Pakistan in 2016 after Uri Base Camp in Kashmir and Jammu was attacked. It also stars Paresh Rawal and Yami Gautam. The movie’s official synopsis notes that the movie is one defining moment in military history of India, which paved the way to the new and stronger India.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

Date of release: 25th January

Manikarnika, one of the most awaited action drama in this year, is finally set to hit the theatres on 25th January after lots of delays. Kangana Ranaut will be seen as Rani Laxmibai who fights against East India Company. This film marks Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut and actor Ankita Lokhande’s Bollywood debut.

Thackeray

Date of release: 25th January

The Abhijit Panse directorial follows the life of Bal Thackeray, a founder of the Indian political party Shiv Sena, the film features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the eponymous person and Amrita Rao as his wife.

Cheat India

Date of release: 25th January

Emraan Hashmi starrer Cheat India is a comedy-drama movie, which focuses on existing malpractices in India’s education system. Emraan Hashmi will be seen as the scamster who is heading a nexus where he gives merit seats to undeserving students to earn money.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

Date of release: 1st February

The Shelly Chopra Dhar directorial has Sonam Kapoor sharing screen space with her father Anil Kapoor for their first time. Through the film’s trailer, it seems that Sonam Kapoor plays the role of the homosexual character. The film also features Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla

Sonchiriya

Date of release: 8th February

The Abhishek Chaubey (Dedh Ishqiya and Udta Punjab fame) revolves around Chambal dacoits and it will give audiences a glance at Chambal dacoits’ lives. The first teaser introduces the audiences to characters of Bhumi Pednekar, Sushant Singh Rajput, Ranvir Shorey, Ashutosh Rana and Manoj Bajpayee. Sonchiriya has been filmed in Mumbai and Chambal.

Gully Boy

Date of release: 14th February

After closing 2018 with the successful movie Simmba, Ranveer Singh kicks of the year 2019 with a new movie “Gully Boy”. In the Zoya Akhtar directorial, Ranveer Singh will be seen as the street rapper, co-starring with Alia Bhatt. The movie is based upon the lives of Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy known for their song "Mere Gully Mein" in Mumbai. Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Varma and Kalki Koechlin also feature in the film.

Total Dhamaal

Date of release: 22nd February

Total Dhamaal, which is the 3rd movie in Dhamaal franchise, has Anil Kapoor sharing the screen space with Madhuri Dixit after eighteen years. It also features Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Esha Gupta, Sanjai Mishra, Javed Jaaferi and Riteish Deshmukh. Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha will recreate the Seventies track Mungda from the 1978 movie Inkaar, which was picturized on Amjad Khan and Helen. Indra Kumar will helm the film with co-production of Ajay Devgn, Fox Star India, Indra Kumar and Mngl Murti Films.

Luka Chuppi

Date of release: 1st March

After the success of Sonu Ke Titu Ki SweetyKartik Aaryan will is geared to set the box office ablaze once again opposite Kriti Sanon with Luka Chuppi. The duo reportedly plays star reporters in the film. Luka Chuppi is helmed by Laxman Utekar and features Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak and Aparshakti Khurana in essential roles.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar

Date of release: 1st March

The Dibakar Banerjee directorial follows the story of a Haryanavi Police Officer (played by Arjun Kapoor) and an ambitious woman (played by Parineeti Chopra), who are united by their suspicion, hate and mistrust for each other.

Kesari

Date of release: 21st March

Starring Parineeti Chopra and Akshay Kumar, Kesari is inspired by The Battle of Saragarhi, in which an army of 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897. Akshay Kumar plays as Havildar Ishar Singh. Punjab 1984 and Jatt and Juliet director Anurag Singh will helm the film.

Mental Hai Kya

Date of release: 29th March

Helmed by renowned director Prakash Kovelamudi, this psychological thriller Mental Hai Kya, starring Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut, is all set to hit the screen on 29th March. The two megastars had previously collaborated in the blockbuster film Queen.

Zoya Factor

Date of release: 5th April

Based on the best-selling novel of Anuja Chauhan, this is the second Bollywood movie of Dulquer Salmaan. It also features Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor in the leading role. Zoya Factor, which is helmed by director Abhishek Sharma, follows an advertising agency executive Zoya Singh (played by Sonam Kapoor), who meets Indian Cricket Team and become the team’s lucky charm in 2010 Cricket World Cup. Zoya then falls in love with Nikhil Khoda (played by Dulquer Salmaan), who disbelieves in superstitions and love.

Kalank

Date of release: 19th April

Kalank is an epic historical and emotional film set in the 1940s. The film is expected to be one dream project of director Karan Johar which was conceptualised by Karan and his father Yash 15 years ago. Directed by Abhishek Varman, Kalank stars Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur and Madhuri Dixit. Besides, the movie marks the collaborations of Bollywood’s three biggest productions involving Fox Star Studio, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Dharma Productions.

De De Pyaar De

Date of release: 26th April

The rom-com movie is helmed by Akiv Ali and produced by Luv Ranjan. It stars Ajay Devgn, Jimmy Shergill, Rakul Preet Singh, and Tabu

Arjun Patiala

Date of release: 3rd May

The Rohit Jugraj directorial features Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Sharma, and Kriti Sanon. Bankrolled by Bhushan Kumar and Dinesh Vijan, Arjun Patiala is all about the romance between a short man and a tall woman, with the height difference leading to comic difficulties.

Student of The Year 2

Date of release: 10th May

The sequel introduces Chunky Panday and Tara Sutaria’s daughter Ananya Panday. It is helmed by Punit Malhotra and also features Tiger Shroff. The film will have Hollywood star Will Smith as a cameo.

Jabariya Jodi

Date of release: 17th May

The Prashant Singh directorial stars Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra in the leading roles. It is based on the tradition of groom kidnapping, prevalent in Bihar where grooms are kidnapped to prevent dowry.

India’s Most Wanted

Date of release: 24th May

Arjun Kapoor’s next movie is Raj Kumar Gupta’s India’s Most Wanted. In the movie, Arjun will play the role of the intelligence officer who is undertaking one secret mission of leading an arrest of a terrorist.

Kabir Singh

Date of release: 21st June

The Shahid Kapoor starrer Kabir Singh is a remake of Telegu film Arjun Reddy. It tells a story of the alcoholic surgeon (played by Shahid) with anger management issues, goes on a self-destructive path after his ex-lover gets married to someone else.

Good News

Date of release: 19th July

The family drama stars Kareena Kapoor-Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani- Diljit Dosanjh as married couples, who try to have a baby.

Mission Mangal

Date of release: 15th August

Based upon Mars mission of India, the film, staring Vidya Balan, Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Sharman Joshi, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen and Kirti Kulhari, will be directed by Jagan Shakti.

Batla House

Date of release: 15th August

Inspired by a true encounter case on 19th September 2008, the film stars John Abraham and Mrunal Thakur in the lead roles. John will be seen as a police officer who led the police encounter in the film.

Made In China

Date of release: 30th August

The movie is a hilarious take on a struggling Gujarati businessman and the bizarre journey he undertakes to become the successful entrepreneur. Filmed in Ahmedabad features Mouni Roy, Rajkummar Rao and Boman Irani.

Chhichhore

Date of release: 30th August

Filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari collaborated with Sajid Nadiadwala in his new film Chhichhore. The film features Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput playing the roles that they have never played before.

Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior

Date of release: 22nd November

Starring Bollywood star Ajay Devgn as an eponymous lead and helmed by Om Raut, the film is inspired by Tanaji Malusare’s life, a 17th-century Maharashtrian Koli military leader in Maratha Empire.

Panipat

Date of release: 6th December

Based upon the 3rd battle of Panipat, the war drama stars Kriti Sanon, Sanjay Dutt and Arjun Kapoor in the lead roles. Panipat is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, who is most-known for directing period movies like Jodhaa Akbar and Lagaan.

Brahmastra

Date of release: Christmas 2019

One of the most anticipated movies in 2019, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna will hit the cinema on Christmas. The fantasy film Brahmastra is directed and written by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar.
