Alia Bhatt is set to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Gangubai, a project which was reportedly offered to the actress even before Inshallah got shelved.

Alia Bhatt is finally gearing up to work under the direction of eminent filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The actress will play the title role in Bhansali’s upcoming directorial venture named Gangubai.

For the unversed, Gangubai was a rustic Maharashtrian, who worked in the red-light district of Kamathipura in Mumbai and changed the lives of many women in the flesh trade.

Gangubai is one of the most-cherished dream projects that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has nurtured for many years. Initially, he had planned to make the film with Priyanka Chopra. However, the project could not materialize back then due to several other national and international commitments of Chopra.

The interesting revelation about the upcoming project is that Alia Bhatt has been roped in for the film even before Bhansali’s much-talked-about project Inshallah with her and Salman Khan fell through after the latter walked out right before the team was set to being production.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt is presently busy shooting for her next movie Sadak 2. It is a special project for the actress as it is being helmed by his father Mahesh Bhatt. It marks her father’s return to direction after a massive gap of two decades.

Also starring her half-sister Pooja Bhatt alongside Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur, Sadak 2 is a sequel to Mahesh Bhatt’s 1991 musical hit Sadak. The film is poised for its theatrical release on 10th July, 2020.
