“Rowdy Rathor”, which hit the silver screen in 2013, was an official remake of 2006 Telugu actioner “Vikramarkudu” starring Ravi Teja and Anushka Shetty in lead roles. It still remains one of the highest grossing films of superstar Akshay Kumar’s career.

Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Rowdy Rathore (2013) is set for a sequel. The big-ticket project is expected to take off sometime in 2020. Rowdy Rathore was an official remake of 2006 action comedy Vikramarkudu.

Directed by Prabhudeva, the remake opened to packed houses and collected over ₹100 crores at the cash counter. Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shabina Khan, Rowdy Rathore still remains one of the highest grossing films of Akshay Kumar’s career.

Shabina Khan, who co-produced the blockbuster film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has confirmed that a sequel to Rowdy Rathore is in the work. She also confirmed that superstar Akshay Kumar might return to reprise his role in the franchise.

While Shabina Khan chose not to divulge further details on the project, a source close to the development reveals that the team is looking at beginning production in 2020.

It will be interesting to see if the makers bring back Sonakshi Sinha to play the female lead or some other actress will get the part.

Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar is currently busy shooting for Rohit Shetty’s next, Sooryavanshi, co-starring Katrina Kaif. He will soon resume the shooting for his upcoming horror-comedy Laxmmi Bomb, which is being directed by Raghava Lawrence.

The superstar has already finished shooting for his three forthcoming films, namely Good News, Mission Mangal and Housefull 4. All three films are set to enter theatres this year only.

After finishing his ongoing projects, Akshay Kumar will team up with filmmaker Chandraprakash Dwivedi to star in his period drama, Prithviraj Chauhan. Speculations are rife in Bollywood corridors that Miss World 2017 Manushi Chillar will play the female lead opposite Akshay Kumar in Yash Raj Films’ venture.
