The draft education policy which suggested to make Hindi as a mandatory language in the syllabus is attracting more and more criticism with each passing day. In a very recent, Tamil actor Siddharth came into highlight with his reactions against the policy. The clauses in the policy had recommended mandatory teaching for Hindi as the 3rd language in all the schools.
The actor too came forward to voice his perspective on Twitter. Siddharth tweeted, "There is a big difference between a native #Tamil speaker learning #Hindi vs being forced to study it and write exams in it. I speak 5 languages and understand 10. I wasn’t forced to learn them and that’s how it should be. #India is a mixture of great languages. Leave them be."
In a series of 2 tweets, he had presented his viewpoint. Siddharth continued on his next tweet to say, "Nobody from #TamilNadu needs to learn #Hindi forcefully. They will learn it if and when the need arises, as is the case for any language other than the mother tongue. Any #Indian who wants to communicate abroad would choose to learn #English ahead of #Hindi. End of discussion."
According to the recently drafted policy, every student in a Hindi speaking state has to learn a modern Indian language apart from the traditionally included languages like Hindi and English. While the non-Hindi speaking state has to opt for Hindi apart from the two languages that their respective syllabus teaches them. This move from the center had amassed a huge reproval from Tamil Nadu with trending hashtags like #TNAgainstHindiImposition. This had forced the committee to revise the policy and pulled Hindi out of the draft making a mandatory of 3 languages that a student chooses.
The chairperson of the committee, K Kasturirangan cleared the speculations by saying that the main focus of the committee and the reason behind their decision was to promote multilingualism and thus empowering the students for more career options. With the debate far from settling down has divided the Twitter into two, one supporting the debate and the others of the opinion that Hindi as a national language should be a mandatory language to be learned. In Tamil Nadu, both the opposition and the ruling party came together to voice their opinion to the committee.
