1. Mental Hai Kya
Release date: July 26
Starring: Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao, Amyra Dastur, and Shaheer Sheikh
For all those who are into dark yet breathtaking cinema, Mental Hai Kya is a must watch which is described as an "adult black comedy crime thriller."
This quirky drama film revolves around a girl (played by Kangana) who's suffering from a mental condition and the prejudices and social taboos attached to the sensitive topic.
However, when its first poster was released earlier this year, the Indian Psychiatry Society objected to the title, asserting that the film’s title is discriminating towards people facing mental health issues. There are some speculations that the makers may have to change the film’s name.
Directed by Ekta Kapoor, Mental Hai Kya has rescheduled the released date for several times.
2. Malaal
Release date: July 5
Starring: Meezaan Jafri, Sharmin Segal, Badri Chavan
Malaal is the romance story of Shiva and Astha coming from contrasting backgrounds and based on the sensitive issue of being a non-Marathi in Mumbai.
While Sharmin's character Astha is shown as a well-educated girl moving to Mumbai, Meezaan's character Shiva is an arrogant young Marathi guy who is not a fan of "outsiders" moving in Mumbai.
Directed by and produced by it is a remake of the 2004 Tamil language film 7G Rainbow Colony and marks the Bollywood debut of Jaaved Jaaferi's son Meezaan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece Sharmin Segal.
3. Super 30
Release date: July 12
Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Tripathi, Amit Sadh, and Aditya Srivastava
Based on the life of Patna-based mathematician Anand Kumar who runs the famed Super 30 program where 30 meritorious students from impoverished backgrounds are chosen and trained to crack the competitive exam, IIT JEE. Its trailer has broken records on the Internet by garnering humongous views within hours and hailed as the "best trailer of the year".
Directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala Film, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, Phantom Films, and Reliance Entertainment, Super 30 has involved itself in several controversies since 2018 including sexual harassment allegations and harsh clash at the box office with Kangana's Mental Hai Kya.
4. Arjun Patiala
Release date: July 26
Starring: Diljit Dosanjh, Kriti Sanon, Ronit Roy, and Seema Pahwa
Arjun Patiala is described as a character-driven comedy with a touch of magic realism and music. Diljit essays the role of an honest and cute cop who was dedicated to eradicating the drug scenario in Punjab. Kriti, on the other hand, plays a hot scoop-hungry crime reporter with a TV channel.
Arjun Patiala is directed by Rohit Jugraj and produced by Dinesh Vijan, the man behind comedies such as Hindi Medium and Stree.
5. Khandaani Shafakhana
Release date: July 26
Starring: Sonakshi Sinha, Badshah, Varun Sharma, and Annu Kapoor
The film is a sex clinic, in which Sonakshi's character Babita plays a sexologist who is trying to make a discussion on the taboo subject of sex mainstream in Indian society. After her uncle's death, Babita gets a sex clinic. Babita initially wants to sell off for a handsome sum but then she decides to bring the dying clinic to its former glory. She hopes to bring local rapper Gabru, played by Badshah, on board to advertise the clinic.
The film is directed by Shilpi Dasgupta and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, and Mahaveer Jain.
