PM Modi Extends His Condolences To Veteran Filmmaker Mrinal Sen

A loss to Bengal, to India and to the world of cinema.

Indian cinema lost one of its greatest legends as Dadasaheb Phalke award-winning film director Mrinal Sen rested on peace on Sunday. He took his last breath at the age of 95 after a prolonged battle with age-related ailments, his family announced.

"Sen passed away today around 10.30 am due to age-related ailments," a family member said.

The auteur, best known for blockbusters namely 'Mrigayaa', 'Neel Akasher Neechey', 'Ek Din Achanak', 'Bhuvan Shome' and 'Padatik', was considered as of the most renowned filmmakers of the Bollywood and an ambassador parallel cinema. The illustrious director is also known for his contribution to the Bengali film industry.

He has been given multiple National Film awards, especially the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005, which is the country's highest award in cinema and marked his legend career for his artistic depiction of social reality.

Tributes poured in for the legend on social media. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of noted film-maker, saying the country is grateful to him for giving some of the most memorable films.

"Our country is grateful to Shri Mrinal Sen for giving us some of the most memorable films. The dexterity and sensitivity with which he made films is noteworthy. His rich work is admired across generations. Saddened by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and admirers," PM said when reacted to his demise.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter and paid tribute to Sen.
