Controversy has now become popular in Bollywood whether it is period dramas, musical films or biopics. Here are Bollywood movies that landed into trouble for different reasons.
The original title of the film was MSG: The Messenger of God but then changed to M.S.G. The film became the subject of the controversy for allegedly insulting towards Sikhs.
Goliyon Ki Raas Leela - Ram Leela
Touted as a modern-day classic, this Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone-starrer ran into trouble after 6 petitioners registered a lawsuit against the movie. The initial title of the film Ram Leela raised the sensitive issue of religious and it was renamed 2 days after the release.
The film created lots of controversies for allegedly promoting drugs issues in Punjab. CBFC asked the filmmakers to remove a whopping amount of 89 cuts in the movie before it hit the big screens. This forced the Udta Punjab to knock on the doors of the court for a fair decision. Despite that, the film still worked wonder at the ticket windows.
Some of the scenes from the trailer did not go down well with the members of the Shia community who opposed the use of the religious symbols in the movie. Especially, they got angry over a scene that shows holy symbols in a Moharrum procession.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
The Karan Johar’s film received lots of flak for casting Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) threatened to block the release date of the film and other cinema association bodies also refused to support the movie.
The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer film created an outrage among the Sikh community around the world for its promo in which Shah Rukh was seen wearing Gatra Kirpan. The protesters claimed that the poster showed the Article of Sikh Faith in a wrong manner and they could not tolerate such acts either in movies or in real life.
The Sikh community once again strongly opposed three scenes from the Anurag Kashyap directorial. One scene showed Abhishek and Taapsee coming in a gurudwara dressed as groom and bride while Taapsee keeps thinking about her ex-boyfriend and the others showed Sikh characters smoking cigarettes.
Aayush Sharma’s debut film was first called Loveratri but the filmmakers renamed it after the tittle was accused of distorting the actual meaning of Hindu festival Navratri.
The producers of Padmaavat had to change the title to Padmavati after facing criticism of essaying Rani Padmavati in the wrong manner.
Ever since the trailer was dropped, the priests in Uttarakhand slammed the movie, terming “It's a case of love-jihad” when two main characters are Muslim and Hindu, fall for each other. It was also banned in several states.
The film got itself into trouble for raising the sensitive issue of religious and using abusive language.
The showcase of Jail barrack in the film upset some activists and jail authorities. Notably, the toilet leakage scene provoked controversy among them since it gave one “bad impression about the jails and jails authorities of the Indians”.
The Accidental Prime Minister
A group of protesters knocked on the Delhi High court’s doors to seek a ban on the film’s trailer, saying that it delivered the wrong representation of the historical facts in order to malign Manmohan Singh's image.
Priya Prakash Varrier’s first Bollywood movie Sridevi Bungalow has recently been in the news after Sridevi’s husband, director Boney Kapoor filed for legal notice to the filmmakers for allegedly taking advantages of his wife's unfortunate death. In her defense, the actress claimed, “Sridevi is just the name of my character in the movie. Who would want to create such controversies”.
One of the biggest hit of 2019 Kabir Singh came under severe criticism for toxic masculinity and glorifying misogyny. Also, one Mumbai-based doctor registered a complaint against the filmmakers for depicting doctors in a wrong manner.
