Amitabh Bachchan To Be Seen In Much-Delayed “Shantaram”?

According to reports, Amitabh Bachchan might be seen in a high-profile project which was originally planned almost two decades ago. Yes, you heard that absolutely right! We are talking about the silver screen adaptation of popular author Gregory David Roberts’ best-selling novel Shantaram, which revolves around an Australian fugitive who starts afresh in the slums of Mumbai.

The big-ticket project is now being developed as a 10-part series to be bankrolled by Apple Inc. Well-known Hollywood actor Charlie Hunnam has, reportedly, come onboard to play the titular character in the series.

The project was first offered to internationally acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair almost 20 years ago as a feature film. Johnny Depp was set to produce the movie, while Joel Edgerton had signed to play the lead character. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan had also been confirmed to play a pivotal part in the film. However, Mira Nair opted out of the film, which led Garth Davis to come onboard as a director, but the latter too bowed out.

Finally, the project has now gone to Apple, and if reports are to be believed, Amitabh Bachchan still remains attached to it. However, it will be interesting to see if Senior Bachchan agrees to be a part of the project after so many years. Moreover, Apple is not planning to shoot the series on real locations in Mumbai, the city where the original story is located. That was also one of the reasons Mira Nair had walked out of the project.

The initially cast of Shantaram also boasted the presence of well-known actors Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Johnny Depp. Will the makers reshuffle the entire cast to roll the project? Let’s wait and watch!

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan is currently busy shooting for his upcoming films Chehre and Brahmastra. Both films are set to hit the marquee in 2020. He will also be seen in Nagraj Manjule’s Jhund.
