Black women are usually mistreated, and they try to respond and defend themselves. However, a label is generated, then attached to them at the moment they do this.

Why Black women are usually accused of bullying? It turns out to be a much-asked question. Here is what we have learned from the lively controversies recently.

Meghan Markle’s controversy

Recently, Meghan Markle became a hot subject of bullying complaint in which the actress was said to drive out two people of staff while she was in Kensington Palace. Needless to say, she is currently coming under fire for this accusation.

Many said that the nature of Meghan's criticism is likely to become a well-trodden pattern which is mainly used to undermine the value of Black woman.

Before Meghan, there are several celebrities facing backlash for being a bully. Earlier in January 2021, reality star Yewande Biala who walked out from the hot show Love Island was claimed of bullying her co-star Lucie Donlan. Yewande went on record to make clear that her housemate refused to call her by her real name. It was because Yewande’s name was way too hard to pronounce.

Member of British girl group Sugababes, Keisha Buchana also shared a video where she tries to share her experience of going through the trauma when she is described as a bully, a very angry Black woman when she was in the band.

The reasons

In fact, studies show that the stereotype of black women is still used even today. It usually characterizes Black women as angry, ill-tempered, aggressive.

It originates in a long-established racist history. Black women are usually mistreated, and they try to respond and defend themselves. However, a label is generated, then attached to them at the moment they do this.

Whether Black women are truly bullies?

According to psychologist Roberta Babb, women are always known to have better soft skills than men like listening, collaboration and empathy. When they decide to step out of this framework, it is likely to create some interpersonal difficulties.

He said,

‘The line between, for example, assertiveness and aggression, influence and manipulation, passion and anger, and requests and demands, becomes distorted. Race can have a central part in that process because of the negative attributes associated with race, power and aggression or violence.’
