“Saand Ki Aankh” Review: It Really Hits The Bull’s Eye

Saand Ki Aankh stars Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles. The film is based on the lives of sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar.

Saand Ki Aankh has been in the news even before it started rolling earlier this year. The film is based on the lives of sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar who fought patriarchy to make a name for themselves in the world of shooting.

Both the characters are played respectively by Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar. Saand Ki Aankh marks the directorial debut of well-known screenwriter Tushar Hiranandani. Here’s my opinion after watching the film.

Story

Set in Johri village of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh, the film revolves around the lives of sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar. Married in a patriarchal family, the two have not really seen the world outside.

When an educated youth from the village (Vineet Kumar Singh) starts a shooting range for the upliftment of his people, Chandro wants her granddaughter Shefali (Sara Arjun) to join the academy. Prakashi does the same: she takes her daughter Seema (Pritha Bakshi) to join the academy and break out of the cycle of inequity.

In doing so, the older women discover their own talent as sharpshooters and start pursuing it clandestinely. What will happen when patriarch Rattan Singh Tomar (Prakash Jha) learns about it?

Critical Analysis

Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar are the backbones of this film. They play their parts to perfection. Despite the film being set in a totally different milieu, the two give hundred per cent to their roles and shine in every single scene featuring them. Vineet Kumar Singh and Prakash Jha lend able support to the film with their highly convincing performances.

Talking about minus points, the major problem with the film is prosthetics used to make the two actresses look aged. The make-up does not look convincing and stands out like a sore thumb in most of the scenes. A lot of time is spent on showing the patriarchy prevalent in the village and how the two women bond, which slows down the narrative a little bit. But if we keep these issues aside, Saand Ki Aankh is a gem of a film that should not be missed at any cost.

Final Verdict

Saand Ki Aankh is powered by outstanding performances from the entire star cast, especially Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar. The story of the movie is gripping and keeps you invested throughout its runtime. I am going with 3 stars.
